Chip Kelly wants you to know he won’t be returning to Oregon to coach the Ducks in 2017.

The San Francisco 49ers coach said Wednesday that he was not a candidate for the school’s football coach opening. Oregon fired Kelly’s successor Mark Helfrich on Tuesday.

“The only person I’ve talked to is Helf,” Kelly said via the San Francisco Chronicle. “So we can talk about the Bears. I have not talked to anybody at Oregon expect Mark Helfrich.”

The 1-10 49ers play the Chicago Bears on Sunday. San Francisco’s poor record is why many wonder if Kelly would want to go back to college football. If the 49ers were 10-1 you can bet it’s not even a consideration.

Kelly compiled a 46- 7 record from 2009-2012 at Oregon and his teams went to BCS bowl games in all four seasons. His seven career losses are one fewer than the Ducks had in 2016 in a 4-8 season. After going 13-2 in 2014, Helfrich’s Oregon team went 9-4 in 2015 before falling below .500.

Kelly left Oregon for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2013. After two 10-6 seasons to start his NFL career, Kelly’s 2015 Eagles went 7-9. The losing season came as Kelly was given full control of football operations and the team traded away running back LeSean McCoy and moved quarterback Nick Foles for Sam Bradford.
