Chicago White Sox walk-off Miami Marlins to snap Miami’s six-game win streak

Luis Robert Jr. hit a walk-off single to lead the Chicago White Sox to a 2-1 walk-off win over the Miami Marlins on Friday at Guaranteed Rate Field to begin a three-game series.

The Marlins fall to 35-29 and saw their season-long six-game win streak snapped as they begin a three-city road trip that will continue with series against the Seattle Mariners and Washington Nationals once they wrap up in Chicago. The White Sox improve to 29-36.

Friday marked just the second walk-off loss for the Marlins this season, with the other coming on May 25 against the Colorado Rockies.

Robert’s one-out single down the third-base line and into left field against Dylan Floro scored Elvis Andrus, who led off the ninth inning with a single and then reached second on a wild pitch. The Marlins intentionally walked Andrew Benintendi to face Robert and set up a potential inning-ending double play.

Prior to Robert’s hit, the White Sox were just 1 for 11 with runners in scoring position.

Marlins starting pitcher Eury Perez, the team’s top prospect, held the White Sox to just one run — a second-inning solo home run from catcher Yasmani Grandal, a Miami Springs alumnus and former University of Miami standout — while striking out six. The 20-year-old worked around a pair of jams, including having the bases loaded and no outs in the third inning.

Through six MLB starts, Perez has a 2.17 ERA, holding opponents to seven earned runs (four of which came via solo home runs) over 29 innings while striking out 30.

Shortstop Joey Wendle hit a solo home run in the fifth — his first home run of the season — to tie the game at 1-1. It was one of the few signs of life from Miami’s offense on Friday. The Marlins had just four hits and two walks. They went 0 for 3 with runners in scoring position.

Arraez hit a leadoff single in the first inning but was held hitless after that for a 1 for 4 day.

The Marlins second baseman’s batting average is now at an even .400.
