Chelsea achieved a dominant group-stage win against Malmo in the Champions League on Wednesday evening, sweeping aside the Swedish team 4-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Impressive in attack right from kick-off, Thomas Tuchel’s side opened the scoring through Andreas Christensen after just 10 minutes, when the centre-back shinned home a volley for his first goal in Chelsea colours. The Blues then doubled their advantage from the spot midway through the first half, as Jorginho opted against his usual skip to smash a penalty past Malmo goalkeeper Johan Dahlin following a foul on Romelu Lukaku.

That challenge marked the end of Lukaku’s evening, with the striker soon limping down the tunnel. There was also an early exit for Timo Werner, who seemed to succumb to a hamstring issue on the cusp of half-time. Thankfully for Chelsea, they continued to thrive on the pitch, beginning the second half with a third goal courtesy of Kai Havertz, who produced a delightful, clipped finish. Before too long, Jorginho rounded out the scoring by netting another penalty after Antonio Rudiger was fouled while taking a shot.

Chelsea’s breathtaking win over Malmo overshadowed by injuries to Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner

22:45 , Jamie Braidwood

Chelsea’s joy at an exhilarating attacking performance to dispatch Malmo 4-0 was quickly washed away by concern at the losses to injury of Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner.

On a damp night at Stamford Bridge, Thomas Tuchel’s side looked to amend assumptions that his side are more efficient than breathtaking with Liverpool and Manchester City grabbing the headlines despite the Blues sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League table.

While the German’s ideas remain a work in progress in the final third, he can rely on one of his cornerstones for inspiration. Mason Mount, returning to the starting line-up after coming on as a substitute against Brentford, predictably sparked a thrilling opening to this Champions League group-stage game with his wasp-like movement.

Jack Rathborn reports from Stamford Bridge:

Chelsea’s breathtaking win over Malmo overshadowed by injuries to key forwards

Full time: Chelsea 4-0 Malmo

22:24 , Jamie Braidwood

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel speaking to BT Sport: "We wanted three points and wanted them deserved and we got both of those.

"We played to huge intensity, we demanded this from us and we played an excellent game until it was 4-0. We are very happy.

"We have a twist of the ankle for Romelu, and muscle injury and hamstring for Timo, so they will be some days out I guess.

"Normally we are in a good place injury wise, only Christian Pulisic is out, but we miss everybody. We have a lot of games, lot of competitions, so now we have to deal and find solutions, no excuses.

"The two were in good shape, they are dangerous and can create and score so now we need to find solutions and guys who waited for their chance need to step up and score. The race is on, the guys who start against Norwich have our trust and we will try to find new solutions.

'We have won games before with Werner and Lukaku, we don't want these problems too often but it happens during a season."

FULL TIME: Chelsea 4-0 Malmo

21:53 , Jamie Braidwood

As comfortable a win as you can dream to get in the Champions League, sealed long before the final whistle. Apart from the injuries to Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner, it’s been a ideal night for Chelsea. Thomas Tuchel’s side performed well and clicked into gear as an attacking unit, with Mason Mount and Kai Havertz looking impressive.

Chelsea 4-0 Malmo

21:51 , Jamie Braidwood

90+1 mins: Havertz is slipped through on goal again but Diawara gets out well to make a brave stop. That should be that.

Chelsea 4-0 Malmo

21:49 , Jamie Braidwood

90 mins: A late free kick from Malmo is headed away by Silva. Chelsea look set for another clean sheet, and Mendy is still yet to make a save.

Chelsea 4-0 Malmo

21:47 , Jamie Braidwood

85 mins: Havertz goes on a slaloming run after a lovely couple of touches before he is fouled. It sets up a free kick for Chelsea 30 yards from goal. Rudiger takes it but he slices it well wide.

Chelsea 4-0 Malmo

21:43 , Jamie Braidwood

81 mins: Mount clatters into a steward while attempting to keep the ball in play, but he looks to be ok - the steward that is.

Mount has been excellent tonight after not starting any of Chelsea’s previous five matches due to injury. Tuchel’s side are so clearly better when he’s in the team.

Chelsea 4-0 Malmo

21:39 , Jamie Braidwood

79 mins: Chelsea continue to flood forwards. The ball is again worked out to James, who looks to slip in Mount. His cross is blocked and from the resulting corner, Mount’s header at the back post goes wide.

Chelsea 4-0 Malmo

21:36 , Jamie Braidwood

76 mins: Good again from Chelsea. James feeds Jorginho with a clever pass in between two Malmo players and the Italian looks for Hudson-Odoi at the back post. The winger slides in but can’t get a clear connection, and the Malmo goalkeeper is fouled as he attempts to gather the ball under pressure from Havertz.

Chelsea 4-0 Malmo

21:34 , Jamie Braidwood

74 mins: Lovely play from Chelsea, with James passing the ball into Mount and the midfielder returning the one-two with a back heel into his path. James’ run is brought to an end as the ball goes out for a corner, which Malmo clear.

Chelsea 4-0 Malmo

21:32 , Jamie Braidwood

72 mins: The match is being broken up by fouls at the moment, with Chelsea losing a bit of their rhythm since the substitutions. Quite understandably so, of course, given Chelsea’s commanding position. Edouard Mendy is still yet to make a save.

Chelsea 4-0 Malmo

21:28 , Jamie Braidwood

67 mins: Alonso’s first act is to be nutmegged, before Jorginho concedes the foul out on the wing. The cross is able to travel into the box before it bounces off a Malmo player and dribbles harmlessly wide.

Chelsea 4-0 Malmo

21:25 , Jamie Braidwood

65mins: Here are the changes for Chelsea. Saul, James and Alonso come on while Kante, Azpilicueta and Chilwell are replaced, with Tuchel looking to rest those players ahead of Saturday’s match against Norwich.

Chelsea 4-0 Malmo

21:23 , Jamie Braidwood

63 mins: Chelsea finally have some defending to do. The Swedish champions win a couple of corners but Chelsea are able to clear the box before a wild Malmo shot from outside of the box sails over the bar.

Chelsea 4-0 Malmo

21:21 , Jamie Braidwood

61 mins: Save! Nice, confident play from Hudson-Odoi. He drives inside from the left before trying to whip the ball across goal, but it’s saved by Diawara.

Reece James, Marcos Alonso and Saul Niguez are all warming up now and could be about to come on.

Chelsea 4-0 Malmo

21:19 , Jamie Braidwood

59 mins: If the game wasn’t put to bed by Chelsea by half time, they’ve absolutely finished it off now. Malmo still have half an hour to endure, as Chelsea are showing no signs of slowing down.

GOAL! Chelsea 4-0 Malmo (JORGINHO 56’)

21:15 , Jamie Braidwood

A different goalkeeper for Jorginho to face, but the same result! The Italian adds a skip this time before burying the penalty straight down the middle, an identical finish to his first.

PENALTY TO CHELSEA! Chelsea 3-0 Malmo

21:14 , Jamie Braidwood

Antonio Rudiger, stop it! The defender chases Pena into midfield and wins the ball back for his team before playing a one-two with Havertz and continuing his run into the box, where he is brought down. The Chelsea fans loved that.

Chelsea 3-0 Malmo

21:13 , Jamie Braidwood

53 mins: A lovely dribble from Kante is brought to an end following a cynical challenge from Christiansen, who is rightly booked. Mount takes the free kick from 25 yards but thrashes it straight into the Malmo wall.

Chelsea 3-0 Malmo

21:10 , Jamie Braidwood

50 mins: Close! This could be anything now, Chelsea are showing no signs of slowing down. Mount flashes a wicked ball across the face, but it evades everyone and runs out for a throw. It was perhaps a bit too high for those in the middle.

GOAL! Chelsea 3-0 Malmo (HAVERTZ 48’)

21:06 , Jamie Braidwood

Brilliant goal! Hudson-Odoi leads the Chelsea break as he carries the ball the full length of the field before slipping in Havertz. Hudson-Odoi’s ball was slightly overhit, which forced Havertz to clip the ball over the goalkeeper from a tight angle. Super finish.

Kick off! Chelsea 2-0 Malmo

21:05 , Jamie Braidwood

Back underway at Stamford Bridge. Malmo have made two changes, including at goalkeeper with Ismael Diawara replacing Dahlin.

Half time: Chelsea 2-0 Malmo

21:04 , Jamie Braidwood

Saul Niguez was warming up at half time. With Chelsea in such a comfortable position, this would be a good opportunity to offer the midfielder some minutes. He’s made just two appearances for Chelsea so far since joining from Atletico Madrid on loan.

The teams are back out for the second half.

HALF TIME: Chelsea 2-0 Malmo

20:57 , Jamie Braidwood

Elsewhere in the Champions League, Juventus are drawing with Zenit St Petersburg in the other match in Group H, while Manchester United are trailing Atalanta 2-0 at Old Trafford in what could be another damaging defeat for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

HALF TIME: Chelsea 2-0 Malmo

20:48 , Jamie Braidwood

A great half from Chelsea, soured by the injuries to Lukaku and Werner. Tuchel’s side have looked like European champions again and Malmo have barely offered a punch in response following a dominant first-half performance from the Blues.

Andreas Christensen opened the scoring with his first Chelsea goal before Jorginho doubled their lead from the spot. Lukaku was injured in winning the penalty following a nasty challenge from behind, before Werner pulled up with a hamstring problem.

Concern for Tuchel, then, but as far as tonight is concerned his side are in a comfortable position and look to be heading to six points in Group H.

Chelsea 2-0 Malmo

20:48 , Jamie Braidwood

45+2 mins: Hudson-Odoi gets a couple of touches around the Malmo box but Chelsea’s attack breaks down shortly before half-time. It’s a big second half for the England forward, as well.

Chelsea 2-0 Malmo

20:46 , Jamie Braidwood

45 mins: Havertz curls the ball over the bar from outside of the box. He was looking for the top corner with his left foot, and wasn’t too far away.

There will be three minutes of time added on following those injuries to Lukaku and Werner.

Chelsea 2-0 Malmo

20:44 , Jamie Braidwood

43 mins: Werner can’t continue and is set to be replaced by Callum Hudson-Odoi. The forward indicated immediately that something was wrong and Werner has joined Lukaku by limping straight down the tunnel under assistance from the Chelsea doctors.

Chelsea 2-0 Malmo

20:42 , Jamie Braidwood

40 mins: Save! More good play from Chelsea. Kante drifts inside on the ball and finds Havertz with a reverse pass. The German had made a good run across his defender and tried to beat Dahlin at his near post, but the goalkeeper stood tall to make the save.

There’s more concern for Chelsea though, as it looks like Timo Werner has pulled his hamstring.

Chelsea 2-0 Malmo

20:40 , Jamie Braidwood

38 mins: Havertz and Werner exchange passes on the edge of the box and the Stamford Bridge crowd urge Werner to shoot at goal. Werner looked a little hesitant to do so and his effort is blocked by a Malmo defender.

Chelsea 2-0 Malmo

20:37 , Jamie Braidwood

35 mins: Right on call, Havertz then plays a loose pass towards Rudiger which runs out of play. Tuchel was not happy with that one - it’s the only thing Chelsea have got wrong so far.

Chelsea 2-0 Malmo

20:35 , Jamie Braidwood

33 mins: Chelsea work the ball into a promising area for Havertz, who fires a shot towards the near post which is saved by Malmo goalkeeper Dahlin.

This is a big night for Havertz now after losing his starting spot from the first few weeks of the season. There could be a spot available on Saturday given Lukaku’s injury.

Chelsea 2-0 Malmo

20:33 , Jamie Braidwood

31 mins: Mount receives possession on the right again but this time flights a cross towards the back post, where Chilwell is arriving. It’s a little high for the wing back but he produces an impressive scissor volley to connect with it. It would have been an extraordinary goal, but it ends up flashing over the bar.

Still, it’s a sign of the confidence that has returned to Chilwell’s game following his run in the team, and the England international then gets another effort on goal following Kante’s lay-off and Mount’s superb flick.

Chelsea are enjoying themselves right now.

Chelsea 2-0 Malmo

20:29 , Jamie Braidwood

28 mins: Mount picks up possession on the right channel and drives a low ball across the box looking for Werner, whose flick at the front post is deflected wide for a corner.

Nothing comes from it but Chelsea quickly regain possession.

Chelsea 2-0 Malmo

20:28 , Jamie Braidwood

27 mins: Chance for Malmo! The front two link up as Birmancevic chips a pass over the top for strike partner Colak, but his volley from the angle is wild and sails over the bar.

Chelsea 2-0 Malmo

20:25 , Jamie Braidwood

24 mins: This was the start, and performance, that Tuchel would have had in mind when he named his starting line-up.

The Blues are in cruise control and Malmo are struggling to compete. Further possession for the hosts follows the restart.

Chelsea 2-0 Malmo

20:23 , Jamie Braidwood

22 mins: Lukaku has gone straight down the tunnel with what seems to be an ankle issue.

The striker had been playing well but is now a major doubt for Chelsea’s Premier League fixture against Norwich on Saturday.

GOAL! Chelsea 2-0 Malmo (JORGINHO 21’)

20:21 , Jamie Braidwood

Confident stuff from Jorginho. He smashes the penalty down the middle to double Chelsea’s lead.

It’s bad news for Lukaku, though. He can’t continue following that challenge and will be replaced by Havertz.

PENALTY TO CHELSEA! Chelsea 1-0 Malmo

20:18 , Jamie Braidwood

A flowing break from Chelsea ends in Lukaku beating a couple of Malmo challenges in the box before being scythed to the ground by Nielsen as he was bearing down on goal.

It’s a definite penalty but there’s concern for Chelsea as Lukaku has stayed down and looks to be in some pain.

Chelsea 1-0 Malmo

20:18 , Jamie Braidwood

16 mins: Chelsea appeal for a penalty after Jorginho goes down in the box. The midfielder had won the ball back in the corner and had space to run into, but was perhaps looking for the foul as he came under pressure from Larsson.

Rudiger then goes on a driving run forward and sets up Werner in the box, but the forward is crowded out and the move breaks down. Chelsea have started well here.

Chelsea 1-0 Malmo

20:14 , Jamie Braidwood

14 mins: Mount takes it but can’t keep the free kick down after beating the wall.

Chelsea 1-0 Malmo

20:14 , Jamie Braidwood

13 mins: The goal has not changed the direction of this game, it’s all Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Lukaku flights a ball to the back post before Kante is fouled on the edge of the box, setting up a good chance for Chelsea.

GOAL! Chelsea 1-0 Malmo (CHRISTENSEN 10’)

20:10 , Jamie Braidwood

Chelsea keep the pressure on following the corner and the ball is eventually bundled in by Andreas Christensen following a cross from Thiago Silva. The breakthrough had been coming but the goalscorer is certainly unexpected - it’s his first goal for Chelsea on his 137th appearance!

Chelsea 0-0 Malmo

20:09 , Jamie Braidwood

8 mins: Save! Lukaku comes close to ending his drought, with a little help from a Malmo defender. The ball breaks to Lukaku in the box and the striker rather scuffs his shot, but it takes a wicked deflection off a defender and is saved by the goalkeeper!

Chelsea 0-0 Malmo

20:06 , Jamie Braidwood

5 mins: How has that stayed out?! It’s a nice move from Chelsea. Mount and Lukaku link up nicely and the Belgian gets to the byline before squaring across the face to Werner, who misses from two yards out! The ball hit Werner’s heel at the front post as he tried to open his foot, but the German was relieved to see the flag go up for an offside on Lukaku.

That decision could have been overturned had Werner scored, however, as Lukaku looked close to being onside.

Chelsea 0-0 Malmo

20:04 , Jamie Braidwood

3 mins: First effort from Chelsea and it comes from Saturday’s goalscorer Chilwell, who connects with Jorginho’s cross at the back post but can’t keep his header down as it flies under the bar.

Chilwell has scored in his last three games for club and country.

Chelsea 0-0 Malmo

20:02 , Jamie Braidwood

1 min: Lukaku gets his first touch as he flicks a pass forward from Silva around the corner to Mount, before Kante drives forward and exchanges a nice one-two with Azpilicueta. Malmo quickly lost possession on both of their first couple of touches of the ball.

Kick-off! Chelsea 0-0 Malmo

20:00 , Jamie Braidwood

It’s a packed house as the Chelsea fans welcome the European champions out onto the pitch.

Is this Chelsea’s most important player at the moment? Edouard Mendy certainly was in Chelsea’s 1-0 win over Brentford on Saturday.

And according to Vithushan Ehantharajah, it was a man-of-the-match performance which showed why he deserved to be included on the Ballon D’Or shortlist.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel, speaking to BT Sport:

[Is this Chelsea’s strongest team?] “We have some strong teams in our dressing room because we have a squad full of quality. We have 21 players who we like and we have a strong team tonight, hopefully we can prove it.

“We want to be at our top level because it’s the top competition in Europe. There’s no other way to win matches and we need a good performance to keep the three points here.

“It’s important to start strong and impose intensity, play our game in the opponent’s half and bring a certain energy that we are used to bringing in the Premier League and Champions League.

[On Werner and Lukaku] “They are two guys who can play together. They are very different from each other. Timo can play around Romelu a little bit, and we use Romelu as a reference up front. We need to create chances.

“We need guys in the box who feel confident in the box. We have Mason [Mount] back and the full-backs have been decisive in recent games, so should be able to have attacks with five or six players in the box and have the coverage to not allow counter-attacks.

Chelsea vs Malmo

Romelu Lukaku will be looking to end his six-game streak without a goal tonight against Malmo.

After marking his return to Chelsea with four goals in four, the Belgian striker has not scored since the opening Champions League win over Zenit in September.

He did score in Belgium’s defeat to France in the Nations League, however, but Tuchel believes he is playing in too many matches for the national team and has not had a proper rest since the Euros this summer.

“In this very moment I feel Romelu is a bit overplayed, I think he played too many competitions over the summer, too many competitions with the national team,” Tuchel said.

“And now he has played the Nations League. He is a fantastic athlete and such a competitive guy that he digs in deep, he wants to win these things and he never takes it easy and judges games. He wants to be out there and win.”

Chelsea vs Malmo

While three points will be the biggest concern for Thomas Tuchel tonight, especially after losing to Juventus last time out, the Chelsea manager will also be keen to see an improved performance from his side.

Perhaps that is why Tuchel has picked such a strong team tonight, as he is maybe trying to play his team into form by picking up a big win against the Swedish opposition.

After impressing earlier in the season, particularly in away games against Arsenal and Tottenham, Chelsea’s momentum was hit following those back-to-back defeats to Manchester City and Juventus.

Victories against Southampton and Brentford have followed, but Chelsea were unconvincing at times. Tuchel will be hoping that tonight is the night where everything clicks into place.

Chelsea vs Malmo: Team news

19:04 , Jamie Braidwood

It’s a little surprising, perhaps, that Tuchel has named such a strong side for what is - on paper - the most straight-forward fixture of the group stage.

The German hinted before tonight that he was considering resting Romelu Lukaku, who he said was “mentally tired” following a busy schedule of matches.

“He is overplayed a little bit,” Tuchel said. “It is difficult to judge whether he needs a break or is it better to keep him on the pitch?”

Chelsea face Norwich in the Premier League on Saturday lunchtime, however, so perhaps Tuchel is viewing that fixture against Premier League’s bottom side as an ideal time to rest the Belgian striker.

Thomas Tuchel makes four changes from the side that started Saturday’s 1-0 win over Brentford, with Thiago Silva, Antonio Rudiger, Jorginho and Mason Mount all coming into the side in place of Trevoh Chalobah, Malang Sarr, Mateo Kovacic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

Ben Chilwell, who scored Chelsea’s winner at the Brentford Community Stadium, keeps his place in the starting line-up ahead of Marcos Alonso.

Chelsea vs Malmo: Welcome!

18:34 , Alex Pattle

Chelsea welcome Malmo to Stamford Bridge this evening as the Champions League group stage continues.

Defending champions Chelsea were beaten 1-0 by Juventus in their last outing in the competition, while Malmo were reduced to 10 men as they suffered a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Zenit Saint Petersburg. Chelsea’s narrow victory over Zenit in the teams’ first game of the campaign means Thomas Tuchel’s side are second in Group H. The Blues are ahead of Zenit on goal difference, while Malmo are bottom of the pool on 0 points and Juventus lead with six.

At the weekend, Chelsea edged past Brentford in the Premier League, securing a 1-0 win despite a late onslaught from the newly-promoted club. Tuchel’s team remained top of the table with that result, for which they had goalkeeper Edouard Mendy to thank in large part. Meanwhile, Malmo followed their defeat by Zenit with a loss in the Swedish top flight, but they have since responded positively by winning back-to-back games – one in the league and one in their domestic cup. They will look to make it three on the bounce tonight but must upset the reigning European champions to do so.
