Yahoo Sports Chargers' Mike Williams ends long TD drought ... and then is penalized for celebration
Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams was approaching the record for most receiving yards in a season without a touchdown when he ended the streak with a tremendous 44-yard score against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.
And then Williams was humbled after the TD.
Williams celebrated the long haul by dunking the ball over the goalpost. And you can’t do that. It drew a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty.
These types of penalties typically come with a fine from the league. But if you check out the video, watch between the grab and the dunk: It appears teammate Keenan Allen talked Williams into the celebration. Allen motions toward the goal post a full 30 seconds after the touchdown is signaled.
We say Allen needs to pick up the tab on this fine ... assuming the NFL doesn’t take heart on Williams ending his long TD-less drought. (Yes, we’re saying that tongue firmly in cheek.)
Williams came into the game with 778 receiving yards and was leading the NFL at 20.5 yards per catch. But his last TD came in Week 17 of last season. Can’t we cut a guy a break here? This game was a laugher when Williams committed the egregious foul of — checks notes — having fun.
The all-time record for most receiving yards in a season without a touchdown catch was Al Toon’s 963 yards in 1991. Toon ended up going 21 months between TD grabs.
Williams’ yardage total prior to scoring actually got up to 797, which would have put him in the top six in most yards without a TD all time had he not scored on his next catch.
