[olg sting] four eligible farmers search for real life romance with a new crop of daters farming for love on ctv >> Nathan: returning to our top story, big news from the world of sports this morning, with toronto gifting the first wnba franchise outside of the united states. For more on this, we're joined by tsn reporter josh lieuen berge. Thanks for joining us. Good to see you. This is huge. What do you think about the timing of this for this major milestone? >> Reporter: yeah, nathan, this is a big moment, a big day and not just for women's sports in canada but for the continued growth of the sport in this country. I've been fortunate to cover a lot of the canadian nba players over the years and they all point to a accept that will moment where they first picked up a basketball or really saw and believed okay, I can do this, I can play professionally and whether it's vince carter at the slam dunk contest or the De rosen-lowry teams, they all trace back to the raptors expansion in '95, so this is that kind of moment and I for one am excited to see the impact that this is going to have on girls and young women growing up in the country for years and decades to come. There are four wnba players from canada right now but I would be shocked if that number doesn't continue to rise over the next few years in the way that we've seen it rise in the nba over the last decade. >> Nathan: and why do you think there's so much interest in the wnba right now? >> Yeah, aisles not just the wnba, it's professional women's sport and I think we've seen that for a lot of different reasons. For the wnba specifically, I think a lot of that is the caitlin clark effect but we have seen this building over the last few years and full credit to larry tanenbaum who recognized that there is not only a want and need for it in this market but a demand, and I mean, he's been trying to go after a team for years, he tried with millions e beforemlsebefore the board rejected it and for fans of marvel you picture the meme of never mind, I'll do it myself, that's sort of what tanenbaum did here, going out on his own, privately funding this with his kilmer group. He's owed a lot I think in terms of putting this -- getting this over the line and making this happen, and a big reason why the wnba is coming to toronto, coming to canada in 2026. >> Nathan: and do you expect to see more leagues and more young girls playing the sport now? >> Reporter: well, absolutely. I just think it hits different when you can see in your hometown or home country up close and personal that this is something that's attainable, it's not just -- in the case of the wnba, I mean, it's been around now for almost 30 years being it's going to be the 30th season in 2026 when the toronto franchise debuts. But for it to be so close to home and hopefully eventually maybe even right away a toronto-born, a canadian-born player playing for the team. Again I think we've seen what that's meant for basketball in this country with the raptors and it's hard not to see that happening here again with this team, four young for young women across the country. It's a really exciting thing and I think that's what the

announcement today and so many people from drake to kyle lowry, masai ujiri, the prime minister in attendance for the announcement today, you could just feel that excitement, that buzz in the building. >> Nathan:ç and like we expect a logo and a team name, that kind of stuff -- when can we expect? >> Reporter: I would imagine that will come in about a year from now. The golden state franchise, the 13th franchise in THEç wnba, just ANNOUNCEDç their name, value cari COMINGç up, they will be debuting next season so with the toronto team debuting a couple of years from now we're probably looking at a one-year time line. I asked the question today what are they looking for in terms of name in ITñr sounds like they're still pretty early in the process. They're going to be doing some crowd sourcing, talking to people in the community and gauging ideas but obviously inspect something that's going to represent not only women's sport BUTç canada as well with the name and with the branding so that's going to be a fun process here and something to look forward to as we wait for this team. Somebody asked with about the wait, two years and how long it might be before the team is actually here and team president theresa resch laughed and said some people have been waiting over 30 years for this, two years is nothing and obviously there are a lot of details to iran out over the next two years. >> Nathan: josh lewenberg, thank you. >> Michelle: an old standard in the treatment of type 2 diabetes is being repurposed as a possible new treatment for multiple sclerosis. >> Nathan: we have the details from our health reporter pauline chan. >> Reporter: met for man was developed some 60 years ago to treat type 2 diabetes and it's proven to be safe but scientists noticed another effect of the drug. >> If you expose neural cells to met for minute they would start making new cells they would make dendrites and new neurons. >> Reporter: and they're thinking about metformin to treat multiple sclerosis. >> Ms is considered an auto immune disease so the exact mechanism is really just the loss of the myelin that surrounds the axe ons in the brain and in the spinal chord so then the cells can't conduct their signals. >> Reporter: mile lin is the fatty sheath after the arms of nerve cells. Without it the nerve cells degenerate. >> With ms is affects people so differently, it's not a one-size-fits-all type of disease so many people have various symptoms. For me, it started initially in my legs and I was having trouble walking. >> Reporter: mark gonzalez was diagnosed with ms two years ago and is on a medication that stops his immune system from attacking his body. >> The only consequence of that, though, is that without b cells it's very easy to get sick and you don't have that defence system. >> Reporter: the researchers hope that early use of metformin will protect neural cells. >> That's why the trial is being run in young patients, to prevent further damage. >> Reporter: so far, through sick kids hospital, they've recruited about 15 of the 30 young adults needed to test metformin for ms in clinical trials. And gonzalez says he'll be watching the results with interest and hope. Pauline chan, ctv news. >> Michelle: new numbers on poverty in canada come with a stark warning... If more isn't done, the food bank system nation-wide could collapse. >> Nathan: for some, a local food bank is a critical part of their safety net. Ctv's heather wright has the story. >> Reporter: this is just part of the line outside a toronto food bank. Where thousands of clients will shop this week, a number that keeps going up. >> As a single mother with four kids it's not easy for me. >> Reporter: according to food banks canada, one in four canadians are experiencing food insecurity. While nearly half of those surveyed feel they are doing worse financially than they were a year ago. These are statistics lee soda says every day. >> There are people who are working fully employed and having to access the food bank. We have seniors, we have newcomers, we have students. >> Reporter: food banks canada released its annual poverty report card, a look at the challenges facing canadians and how well governments are responding to them. >> We're not doing enough as a country to make sure people are able to make ends meet right now. Her most provincial governments received grades in the d range, while seven out of ten got a d-minus for what the report called an insufficient approach to poverty reduction. A lack of affordable housing and stubbornly high food prices have created a perfect storm of need in many parts of the country. And there are concerns the system simply can't keep up. >> They cannot continue to meet the growing demands with the amount of food and donations that are coming through the doors. And even then, no system is designed for, you know, growth like we've seen. >> Reporter: the report
