When a non-participating human person runs onto the field during a soccer game, it can be quite frustrating. It causes a break in play, the TV cameras are obliged to cut away to deny the attention-seeker the one thing they desire and the local police’s jail cells get one extra inhabitant that night.

But it’s a completely different story when play is interrupted by an animal. Who could forget the legendary status of the Anfield Cat? Or the utterly adorable Galatasaray puppies? Or the slightly less adorable Blackburn chicken?

During Pachuca’s Liga MX clash with Chiapas over the weekend, zoological history was made when two different animal species invaded the pitch in the space of a single half!

In the 66th minute, play was suspended when a lovable mutt bounded onto the field.

The dog wandered over to one of the managers on the touchline before heading out to greet the players – which might give Liverpool some inspiration for a better way to pass messages from the bench to the field.

The domestic pet-based action looked to be over when the furry invader was hauled away by stewards, who appeared to use a belt as a makeshift leash. However, in the 85th minute, a cat demanded to be let in on the fun by casually sauntering onto the field, too.

It’s not clear how two animals could possibly get on the grass at an enclosed, 30,000-seat modern stadium, but Mexican soccer is surely richer for the experience.

And while most human pitch invaders are led away in handcuffs, the dog managed to get a tour of the dressing room.

The club also put a happy ending on the story, confirming on Twitter that a local woman has agreed to adopt the dog. As for the cat? Well, it’s a cat. It doesn’t need you or your hospitality, thank you.
