Casado, Olmo start in a 4-2-3-1 – How Barcelona can line up against Borussia Dortmund
Barcelona are set to face Borussia Dortmund in one of the most eagerly awaited matches of this week’s UEFA Champions League at Signal Iduna Park.
This game holds significant importance for Barcelona, as a victory would all but secure their passage to the Champions League knockout stage.
Given the stakes, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick is unlikely to experiment with his lineup, and he will field his strongest team.
Dortmund have been in fine form this season in the Champions League, winning four of their five matches so far. Their record is equal to Barcelona’s, though the Catalan side sits ahead due to a superior goal difference.
Despite this, Dortmund’s impressive performance in the competition cannot be underestimated, and Barcelona will need to be at their best to overcome them.
In contrast, Barcelona have consistently delivered in Europe, most recently securing a dominant 3-0 win over Brest, which helped them maintain their position in the top eight of the group.
Looking at the possible lineup for Barcelona against Dortmund, let’s break it down position by position.
Defence
In goal, Barcelona’s number one choice remains Inaki Pena. Despite the arrival of Wojciech Szczesny two months ago as an emergency signing, Pena has continued to impress and will be the starter once again.
In defence, Hansi Flick is expected to stick with his current backline. Jules Kounde will maintain his position as the right-back, while Pau Cubarsi and Inigo Martinez will continue to hold the centre-back roles.
Despite being included in the travelling squad, it appears that Ronald Araujo will not feature in the match and will likely watch from the sidelines.
At left-back, Alejandro Balde will keep his place, completing a solid defensive unit that has been a key factor in Barcelona’s success.
Midfield
Barcelona’s midfield is another area where Hansi Flick has plenty of options. However, with the importance of this match, it seems unlikely that he will make any significant changes.
Marc Casado and Pedri are expected to continue in the defensive pivot positions, providing the necessary balance and creativity.
Frenkie de Jong is available and has been impressive in his recent appearances, but his defensive shortcomings in recent matches may prevent him from starting this time.
Dani Olmo, who has had success against Dortmund in the past, including scoring three goals in his career against them, will almost certainly retain his spot as the number 10, pulling the strings in midfield and offering support to the attack.
Attack
Barcelona’s attack is expected to feature Lamine Yamal, Robert Lewandowski, and Raphinha.
Lewandowski, in particular, has a strong record against Dortmund, having scored 27 goals in 26 matches against them during his career. His experience and clinical finishing will be crucial in this high-stakes match.
On the wings, Raphinha and Yamal will continue their dynamic partnership. The pair have been in excellent form this season, and their pace and creativity will be key to breaking down Dortmund’s defence.
Their ability to provide service to Lewandowski and finish chances themselves will be vital if Barcelona are to secure a crucial win.
