Carlos Condit vs. Demian Maia Shifted from UFC 202 to UFC on FOX 21 Main Event

Carlos Condit vs. Demian Maia Shifted from UFC 202 to UFC on FOX 21 Main Event

The UFC 202 fight card, which features the rematch between Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor, was getting a little too stacked, so the UFC on Tuesday pulled a welterweight match-up between Carlos Condit and Demian Maia from the card. Condit vs. Maia is now the main event for UFC on FOX 21 on Aug. 27 in Vancouver.

UFC officials confirmed the fight to MMAWeekly.com following an initial tweet by Canadian reporter Neil Davidson.

Condit (30-9) hasn’t fought since losing his bid to take the title from Robbie Lawler at UFC 195 in January. After losing a split decision to the champ, Condit contemplated retirement, saying, “I have to see if I can continue to do this.”

Obviously, he decided that he could continue to fight, at least one more time, and will do so against Maia at UFC 202.

The last few years, however, have been rocky for Condit, who has won the interim version of the welterweight title, then lost a unification bout to Georges St-Pierre, and bounced between wins and losses in his most recent bouts.

Maia (23-6) has recently been streaking towards the top of the division, passing Condit in the UFC’s official rankings along the way. He has won his last five bouts, including an impressive submission victory over Matt Brown at UFC 198 in May. A victory over Condit would make it difficult to deny him a shot at the welterweight crown.

Also confirmed for UFC on FOX 21: Maia vs. Condit: Anthony Pettis vs. Charles Oliveira, Paige VanZant vs. Bec Rawlings, Jim Miller vs. Joe Lauzon, Enrique Barzola vs. Kyle Bochniak, Chad Laprise vs. Thibault Gouti, Sam Alvey vs. Kevin Casey, Shane Campbell vs. Felipe Silva, Ryan Janes vs. Adam Hunter, and Garreth McLellan vs. Alessio Di Chirico.
