Tonight was supposed to be the rematch of Carey Price versus the New Jersey Devils after the infamous ‘Price Pummels Palmieri’ incident.

Then Michel Therrien went and ruined all the fun and started Al Montoya. At least the Jersey faithful had some fun with Price during the warmup.

The rage monster that enveloped Price causing him to hammer away on Palmieri made it’s way down to Raleigh and possessed Cam Ward.

It was a really, really rough game for the Carolina Hurricanes to say the least. The pest that is Patrik Hornqvist was all up in Ward’s grill.

With ‘Canes down 4-0 in the second, Hornqvist slides into Ward with the help of Jordan Staal. As Hornqvist gets back to his skates, Ward gives him a nice chop on the side of the legs.

Ward was not penalized for the incident.

BUT he did get a penalty for his next fit of rage.

The Penguins were now up 5-0 with 13:26 left in the third period. After another keffuffle in front of his net, Hornqvist finds himself laying to the side of the crease with Ward menacingly starting to get up and come his way.

The goaltender lunges down at Hornqvist whose is on his back. He leads with his blocker and punches the Penguin in the face using his blocker before being separated.

For his troubles, Ward received a two-minute roughing penalty.

As we pointed out with Price and his run-in with his Palmieri, Rule 51.3 states that the goaltender should receive a match penalty IF intent to injure is seen by the referee:

Price’s incident was far more obvious than Ward’s, but as we said before, who in their right mind in going to give Price a match penalty?

Ward didn’t get one either, so we guess it’s even? What would be egregious and something the NHL is unlikely to do is punish Ward further; there is no precedent set by Price to do that.

Plus, giving up 7 goals total to the Penguins is punishment enough for Ward.
