Yahoo Sports Cardinals Hall of Fame manager Whitey Herzog suffers stroke
The St. Louis Cardinals announced on Tuesday that former manager Whitey Herzog suffered a stroke but that he is resting and “doing well” after receiving treatment.
He suffered the stroke while attending his charity golf tournament on Monday, according to the Cardinals.
“Whitey and his family wanted to let everyone know that he has received treatment and is currently resting, and doing well,” a team statement reads. “Whitey is hoping for a quick recovery, and he and his family are very appreciate of the caring support that everyone has shown them.”
Herzog’s legacy
Herzog, 87, was a major league manager from 1973 to 1990 for the Cardinals, Texas Rangers, California Angels and Kansas City Royals. He helmed the Cardinals from 1980 to 1990, leading them to the 1982 World Series in addition to National League pennants in 1985 and 1987.
He also played eight seasons in the major leagues from 1956 to 1963, where he compiled a .257 career batting average with 25 home runs and 172 RBI in 634 games.
He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2010 via a Veteran’s Committee vote.
