The second round of the League Cup gets underway on Tuesday night as clubs look to get their name in the hat for the third-round draw, when the top seven from last season’s Premier League join the competition.

The EFL has drawn plenty of criticism regarding the competition, won by Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United last season, having awarded the sponsorship rights to Thai energy drink company Carabao until 2020.

The new sponsors took the first round draw to Bangkok where, on a graphic shown on their Facebook livestream, Charlton were shown to be playing twice and other sides were matched up with the wrong opponents.

The draw for the second round, back in the UK at Sky Sports' studios in London, also ended in chaos as John Salako struggled to work out who was being drawn as the home side and who was away.

The announcement for the third-round draw, however, has caused the biggest upset yet - here’s all you need to know...

When and where

The EFL have announced that the draw will take place on Thursday in China at 11.15am local time, meaning the clubs back in Britain will found out their opponents at around 4.15am.

The decision has been defended by the EFL, who claimed they understood the frustrations but that the scheduling worked in line with their desire to reach new Asian markets.

"We understand that not everyone will agree on the timing of this week’s round three draw," read their statement.

"But in staging in this way it will give the competition both the maximum exposure in the UK, Chinese and South East Asian markets.

"This is not only an important factor for the EFL but also our new sponsors Carabao, who, like ourselves, plan to use the growing global appeal of the competition to reach new audiences."

How to follow

After the first and second-round draws, Thursday’s draw will not be broadcast on TV or via a livestream.

Carabao will be providing coverage on their Twitter feed, and Standard Sport will have everything covered for you when the draw happens.
