Capitals honour Alex Ovechkin for reaching 700 goals

After joining elusive company and becoming just the eighth player in NHL history to net 700 career goals on Saturday, the Washington Capitals had something special in store for the greatest player the franchise has ever known.

Ahead of Tuesday’s Capitals-Winnipeg Jets matchup, Ovi and his family watched on as a touching tribute blasted across the scoreboard.

It was a moment that included words of praise and respect from current and former teammates, Capitals franchise legends, Hockey Hall of Fame inductees, and several of the greatest goal scorers the game has ever seen—capped off with a cameo from Ovi’s parents and son.

Entering Tuesday’s action, Ovechkin ranked third in the NHL with 42 tallies — trudging through a neck-and-neck battle for the Rocket Richard Trophy with David Pastrnak and Auston Matthews.

In typical Ovi fashion, he wasted little time pulling into a tie for second as he potted goal No. 701 just minutes after he was honoured, batting home his own rebound for his 43rd goal of the season just 1:55 in.

Ovechkin is now, insanely, within striking distance of Wayne Gretzky’s career mark of 894—a number widely thought to be untouchable as recent as a few seasons ago. As of this writing, Ovechkin sits exactly 100 goals behind Gordie Howe for second on the all-time list.
