Canucks Pull Off Last Second Comeback, Beat Flames In OT To Remain Perfect In 2024 Pre-Season

It was a night to remember in Abbotsford as the Vancouver Canucks defeated the Calgary Flames 4-3 in overtime. Jake DeBrusk scored twice, including the overtime winner, while Jiří Patera made 16 saves in the win. The game also featured Max Sasson scoring his first of the pre-season, while Daniel Sprong delivered a game-tying goal that should run on highlight reels all week. The victory moves the Canucks to 2-0 in the pre-season and also puts an end to Calgary's three-game winning streak.

Vancouver received several standout performances, most of which came from its NHL talent. Sprong, Phil Di Giuseppe, and Kiefer Sherwood were arguably the best skaters, while Quinn Hughes looked in regular-season form with his playmaking and skating. Sasson also had a strong showing, scoring the game's first goal and finishing the night with three shots on goal.

Speaking of Sprong, he scored what might be the goal of the pre-season. With 15 seconds left, he picked up the puck at his own blue line, deked past a defender as he entered the zone and beat Devin Cooley for the game-tying goal. The goal is a good reminder of what Sprong can do when the puck is on his stick and could be a preview of what fans can expect from him this season.

Canucks fans also got their first chance to see the Pettersson-DeBrusk duo, which connected on the overtime winner. When asked after the game about his two goals, DeBrusk said, "I think the first one's kind of lucky, but the second one was all Petey. Obviously, you want to save some of those for the regular season, but in saying that, I think that you always want to get the first one as fast as possible and kind of go on a roll. Like I said, just two great plays or one was kind of lucky, and the other one was just a sick play, two of the best players in the league."

Lastly, Jiří Patera had a solid game in the net. While he didn't face a ton of shots, he was able to come up with some key saves, including stopping a few breakaway chances. When asked about his goaltender, Head Coach Rick Tocchet said, "He played really well. Made some really nice saves, looked big in the net, very good job for us tonight." Overall, it was a good start for Patera, who is projected to play an important role for the Abbotsford Canucks this season.

Up next for the Canucks will be a trip down to Seattle, where they will face the Kraken on Friday night. Vancouver is already 1-0 against Seattle this pre-season, having defeated the Kraken 3-1 on Tuesday night. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 pm PT from Climate Pledge Arena.
