Elias Pettersson is the league’s top rookie from the 2018-19 NHL season.

The star winger with the Vancouver Canucks captured the award over rookie standouts Jordan Binnington of the Stanley Cup champion St. Louis Blues and Rasmus Dahlin of the Buffalo Sabres.

Pettersson, 20, scored 28 goals and finished with 66 points in 71 games, and added seven game-winning markers, on his way to posting the most prolific rookie scoring season in Canucks history. In addition, he was the first rookie to lead his class in both goals and assists since Artemi Panarin three seasons ago, and the 31st in NHL history.

Binnington finished (a close?) second to Pettersson despite rescuing the Blues from a last place finish, and instead bringing them to within a point of the division title before ultimately helping deliver St. Louis a Stanley Cup.

While Binnington’s complete body of work is probably more impressive, it’s a regular season award and the Blues’ goaltender didn’t make his first career start until Jan. 7.

Meanwhile Pettersson established himself as the runaway favourite from the start of the season, shining as early as opening night.
