Canucks bringing back 'Flying Skate' jersey in 2019-20

Vancouver Canucks fans have spoken. They want to relive that magical run to the 1994 Stanley Cup Final. But while franchise greats such as Pavel Bure, Kirk McLean and Trevor Linden won’t be returning to the ice any time soon, their style will.

The 2019-20 season will be the big 5-0 for Vancouver, and the Canucks will celebrate by wearing the iconic ‘Flying Skate’ on select games throughout the campaign.

A vote on the team’s website gave fans three options to rehash for this significant anniversary. In the end, the ‘Flying Skate’ collected 70% of the vote to beat out the ‘Flying V’ of the late 1970’s and ‘Original Orca’ that was squad used for ten seasons until 2007-08.

Essentially, the ‘Skate’ came as a result of the ‘V’. It was a transition from one of most aggressive jersey designs in NHL history to something that was comparably more subtle.

It’s not the threads themselves that made this decision easy for the fans though. It was the significant moments that came in that era.

Let’s take you back.

It’s Game 7 of the opening round in the 1994 playoffs. McLean goes post-to-post to rob a one-timer off the stick of Calgary Flames forward Robert Reichel in overtime with the score knotted at three.

The play, now affectionately known as ‘The Save’, preserved the Canucks’ season and set up Bure’s breakaway winner in double overtime.

Vancouver won two more rounds before its run ended in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final, and with a crushing 3-2 loss to the New York Rangers.

Reminiscing about the past and what could have been may be exactly what Vancouver fans need to get through the upcoming season. With the Sedins gone and only a few bright spots in the lineup, checking out highlights from the ‘Flying Skate’ days may be what get them through.
