Canadian Charles Hamelin has set a new Olympic record in the 1,000m short track speed skating event in PyeongChang.
Hamelin exploded to the finish line in his qualifying heat Tuesday night at Gangneung Ice Arena, ending with a time of 1:23.407.
The record was previously held by South Korea’s Lee Jung-Su, who set the record at 1:23.747 at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver.
In the fifth heat, the 33-year-old from Quebec inched past competitors from China and France to clinch the first spot and qualify for the quarterfinals, which will take place on Feb. 17.
Hamelin is a four-time Olympian, and four-time Olympic medal winner.
Along with Hamelin, Canada’s Samuel Girard will also compete in the quarterfinal on Saturday.
