Ontario anticipates hitting 1,000 new cases daily in October

The province unveiled its latest modelling information on Wednesday, which suggested that based on the current trajectory, Ontarians can anticipate seeing 1,000 new cases each day by mid to late October. Cases have been doubling every 10 to 12 days in recent weeks. The latest models don’t take into account new regulations that have recently been put in place.

Today, Ontario reported 625 new cases of COVID-19, as well as four newly-reported deaths related to the virus. According to Deputy Premier and Minister of Health Christine Elliott, 62 per cent of the positive cases were people under the age of 40. The majority of cases were in Toronto (288), Peel Region (97), Ottawa (64) and York Region (41). There were 35,800 tests completed on Tuesday, with a further 67,126 tests under investigation.

Quebec sees more than 800 cases

Quebec is reporting 838 new cases of COVID-19 in the province, as well as one additional death related to the virus. There are currently 5,890 active cases in Quebec.

The highest numbers of cases were seen in Montreal (318) and Quebec City (134). Both cities are now at the Red level of alert. Premier François Legault held a press conference this afternoon that updated the public on the measures that will be enforced in Red zones. Beginning Oct. 1, residents in Red zones will not be able to visit bars or restaurants for 28 days, however bars and restaurants in Orange zones will not be taking addresses of residents who visit their establishments.

There are 15 more people who have been hospitalized with the virus, bringing the total number of people currently in hospital to 262, including 43 in intensive care.

Updates from across Canada

One new case of COVID-19 was reported in Nova Scotia, bringing the total number of active cases to two. The case is in the Northern zone and is related to travel. New Brunswick has reached its fifth day without any new cases of COVID-19, and no additional updates were released today for Newfoundland and Labrador or Prince Edward Island.

Manitoba reported 40 new cases of COVID-19 in the province on Wednesday. There were new cases in all five regions of the province, including 31 in the Winnipeg health region. Another outbreak has been declared at a long-term care home in the province, as the Calvary Place Personal Care Home enters the Red alert level.

In Saskatchewan, 14 new cases of COVID-19 were reported, as well as 13 people who have recovered from the virus. The majority of new cases were in Regina, with eight new cases. One of the people who tested positive includes a Regina Police Services member.
