Canada survives mighty Swiss scare at World Championships
Tenths of a second away from elimination in the quarterfinals at the hands of Switzerland, Canada somehow found a way to avoid an unlikely exit at the IIHF World Championships in Slovakia.
With Canada pressing with the extra attacker down 2-1 on Nico Hischier’s goal for the Swiss, Damon Severson was set up to let a last-ditch attempt fly from the point, only to see it blocked. But it would lay flat on the ice on the rebound, letting the New Jersey Devils defenseman step into another shot. This time it found a seam through a mess of bodies stacked up in front of goaltender Leonardo Genoni, who could only get enough padding on it to slow it down..
Trickling just over the line with 0.4 seconds remaining in the regulation, Severson sent the game to overtime.
