New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton played through a shoulder injury for multiple seasons. Newton revealed his shoulder hasn't been right since 2016 in a video released on YouTube on Friday.

The issue didn't impact Newton last season. In the video, which was shot last September, he says his shoulder is fully recovered after he felt like "a wounded dog" the previous couple seasons.

Newton explained he injured his shoulder after throwing an interception against the then San Diego Chargers in Week 14 of the 2016 NFL season. Newton said he messed up his AC joint on the play and "ever since then, it's just been a part of me."

While Newton's shoulder was fine entering the 2020 season, he dealt with other issues in 2020. Newton missed one game early in the season due to COVID-19 protocols. He started 15 games for the Patriots, but battled an abdomen injury down the stretch. Newton finished the season with just 8 passing touchdowns against 10 interceptions. He did, however, have 12 rushing scores, as the Patriots relied on him as a runner when they got close to the end zone last season.

Newton's struggles could spell the end of his time as a starter if they continue in 2021. The Patriots selected Mac Jones with their first pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, and he could see the field if Newton can't return to form.

Even if Newton plays at a high level, his time in New England could be done after this season. Newton only signed a one-year deal with the team, giving the Patriots an easy out if they want to hand the reins over to Jones in 2022.
