Breaking: Tobias Rieder scored a goal

One of the NHL’s stranger slumps has finally met its end as (yes, forward) Tobias Rieder, who went the entire 2018-19 without tickling the twine a single time, ended a 75-game goal-scoring drought on Tuesday night.

Fittingly, the tally was scored in garbage time on a greasy rebound with the Flames down three in the game’s final seconds, but still.

This wretched slump goes back nearly a year-and-a-half, with Rieder last scoring on April 5, 2018 when he was still a member of the LA Kings. Rieder finished the 2017-18 campaign with 12 tallies before trudging through all of last season (67 contests) and the first seven games this year without a tally to his name.

Oilers Chairman Bob Nicholson notoriously called out the scarcely-used forward at the end of last season in one of the most Oilers things we’ve ever seen — which is saying a lot.

Rieder now has 56 career goals, none more memorable than an end-of-October dumpster-diver in a 5-3 loss.
