Former Florida defensive tackle Caleb Brantley has been charged with battery stemming from an April 13 incident.

Brantley was involved in an altercation with a woman early that morning where she allegedly struck him multiple times and he “pushed her out of his space.” A police report initially said Brantley was the victim and was simply acting in self-defense.

The misdemeanor battery charge accuses him of a retaliatory kick to the woman’s head. A kick that was hard enough to force the woman to need a root canal.

“[The defendant] responded by striking the [victim] in the face knocking her unconscious. The VIC sustained dental injuries that displaced a tooth and will require a root canal. DEF’s use of force was clearly out of retaliation and not self-defense. Additionally, the intensity of the DEF’s force far exceeded what was reasonable or necessary.”

Two witnesses are also cited who say they saw the incident. The initial police report said there were multiple witnesses that corroborated Brantley’s side of the story. According to the first report, Brantley “had no injuries and did not want to be a victim.”

Brantley has been pegged as an early-round pick in the 2017 NFL draft. It begins Thursday. He had 31 tackles and 9.5 tackles for loss in 2016 and is rated as Shutdown Corner’s No. 42 overall prospect.
