If you weren’t a fan of the long-term deal the New York Islanders gave to Casey Cizikas in June, you may want to look away at their latest re-signing.

The Islanders announced Friday morning that they’ve locked up forward Cal Clutterbuck with a five-year extension. The deal is reportedly worth $3.5 million a year, per Elliotte Friedman.

Clutterbuck, 29, is in his fourth season with the Islanders and was one part of the “best fourth line in hockey” with Cizikas and Matt Martin. That trio, thanks to their notoriety, have now cashed in for a combined $44.25 million since the end of last season.

Dan at Lighthouse Hockey is no fan of this deal.

Clutterbuck’s career high in goals (15) and points (23) were both achieved last season. Per Corsica.hockey, his career 5v5 CF% is below 50% (his best for a season was 51% in 2014-15). And before you say it, yes, his role is about more than points as one of the team’s top penalty killers. Is all that worth five years and $3.5 million a season, almost $7 when you combine it with Cizikas? Nope.

It’s unknown at the moment if Clutterbuck’s deal includes any sort of no-movement clause, which could be an interesting wrinkle with the June expansion draft on the horizon and teams getting their ducks in a row with who they have to protect and who they’ll leave unprotected.

This extension means that every current Islanders forward is locked up through next season, with John Tavares set to cash in at some point as his contract is set to end after the 2017-18 NHL season. You’d think, though, that GM Garth Snow would want to invest in some top-level linemates for his superstar captain?
