'The Burnt Orange Heresy' trailer: Mick Jagger returns for his biggest acting role in decades

Watch: Mick Jagger in The Burnt Orange Heresy trailer

Sir Mick Jagger is making a rare return to acting in the first trailer for art world thriller The Burnt Orange Heresy.

The Rolling Stones frontman is playing a mysterious wealthy art dealer opposite Tenet star Elizabeth Debicki and Dracula’s Claes Bang, in the film which marks his first major acting role since 2001’s The Man From Elysian Fields. It sees Jagger’s character enlisting help to steal a painting from a reclusive artist, played by Donald Sutherland.

Jagger has had a mixed acting career to date, enjoying more success as a film producer behind the scenes, rather than in front.

He made his acting debut with two films released in 1970: playing the title role in Tony Richardson’s Ned Kelly, and in Nicholas Roeg’s rock drama Performance.

Ned Kelly was disowned by Jagger and its director, both of whom failed to appear at the film’s premiere. Jagger famously admitted to never having sat through it himself.

Performance, in which Jagger played a reclusive rock star, received mixed reviews upon release, but has since gone on to be recognised as an important film in British cinema. Other acting roles included sci-fi thriller Free Jack and WW2 drama Bent.

Jagger’s production company Jagged Films were behind the James Brown biopic Get On Up, starring Chadwick Boseman, 2001’s Enigma, HBO’s Vinyl and scores of documentaries.

Talking about his acting hiatus, Jagger told USA Today his absence in front of camera for 19 years wasn’t for lack of trying.

He said it came down to "laziness and not getting a decent script. I would like to have done a lot more, but it's a funny world, film. You don't get that many interesting things; you get a lot of rubbish offered to you that you might do if that was the only job. But I have other things to do."

Sony Pictures is releasing the film into UK cinemas on 30 October.

Synopsis: Charming and ambitious art critic, James Figueras (Claes Bang), has fallen from grace. He spends his days in Milan lecturing witless tourists about art history. His only glimmer of hope is a newfound love interest, the enigmatic American, Berenice Hollis (Elizabeth Debicki).

An opportunity strikes when he is contacted by wealthy art dealer Joseph Cassidy (Mick Jagger) who summons James to his villa on Lake Como and asks him to steal a painting from the legendary reclusive artist, Jerome Debney (Donald Sutherland). Soon, James’ greed and ambition get the better of him, and he finds himself caught in a web of his own making.
