Brent Burns, Mark Giordano and Victor Hedman were named as finalists for the James Norris Memorial Trophy, awarded annually to the NHL’s best defenceman.

Burns won the award in 2016-17 and led all defenceman with 83 points during the regular season. Known for his offensive proficiency, Burns led the Sharks in scoring and remained a key component of their power play.

Giordano submitted the best year of his career, steering the Calgary Flames to the NHL’s second-best record during the regular season. The 35-year-old finished second among defenceman with 74 points and was lauded for his all-around excellence, emerging as arguably the most complete defender in the NHL.

Hedman captured the Norris last season and followed up with another strong campaign, but was considered by some to be a surprise inclusion among the finalists. Starring for the Tampa Bay Lightning, Hedman recorded 54 points in 70 games, and helped lead the team to the Presidents’ Trophy.
