Burger King apologizes for offering Russian women Whoppers for getting pregnant by World Cup players

Burger King Russia posted a promotion on social media Tuesday offering Russian women Whoppers and cash for getting pregnant by World Cup players.

The post has since been removed, but Deadspin grabbed a screenshot and translation of the promotion before it disappeared.

That translates roughly into:

Burger King, within the framework of social responsibility, has appointed a reward for girls who get pregnant from the stars of world football. Each will receive 3 million rubles, and a lifelong supply of Whoppers. For these girls, it will be possible to get the best football genes, and will lay down the success of the Russian national team on several generations ahead. Forward! We believe in you!

So, basically, BK Russia wanted to promote hamburgers by encouraging Russian women to have sex with visiting soccer stars in order to breed a superior nation of future soccer players. And they offered a lifetime supply of Whoppers and roughly $46,980 to entice women to do so.

Burger King Russia has since posted an apology on Russian social media site VK.

Google translates the apology to read thusly:

We apologize for the statement we made. It turned out to be too insulting.
We thank you for the feedback and hasten to inform you that we have already removed all materials related to the application.

Burger King apologized in a statement to the Associated Press on Wednesday.

Per AP:

“We are sorry about the clearly offensive promotion that the team in Russia launched online.” It said the offer “does not reflect our brand or our values and we are taking steps to ensure this type of activity does not happen again.”

Prior to the World Cup, a Russian lawmaker warned women against having sex with visitors during the World Cup, expressing concern about single parenthood and mixing races.

There appear to be conflicting points of view from Russian corporations and government on whom the women of Russia should and shouldn’t be having sex with.
