What is ‘brown noise’? TikTok claims it can help you focus

Touted as a way to get better sleep, white noise masks other disruptive sounds. It’s a popular option for sound machines, and many parents have tried to use a vacuum (white noise) to get their fussy infants to sleep. Brown noise (and the similar pink noise) is a different sonic hue, meaning it will sound, feel and have slightly different effects than white noise.

People on TikTok have discovered brown noise’s mind-clearing effects, and the hashtag #brownnoise currently has 77.4 million views.

What is the difference between brown noise, white noise and pink noise?

According to Sound of Sleep, white noise sounds more like “a radio tuned to an unused frequency.” That’s because white noise has equal intensity across every frequency detectable to the human ear.

Healthline states that white noise “may help you get a better quality night’s sleep by masking environmental or outside noises that are causing disturbed sleep.” It can also help you stay asleep and train your brain to know when to sleep if used regularly.

Pink noise is a form of white noise with a lower pitch that can filter out higher sounds, often dubbed “ambient noise.” This means it sounds more like “steady rainfall or wind.” It’s considered more soothing than white noise. Sleeping with pink noise has been shown to improve short- and long-term memories.

Brown noise (or red noise) has a deeper pitch, so it sounds rougher or more dissonant than pink noise, like the “roar of a river current or a strong wind.” Brown noise aids in relaxation, improves focus and can reduce ringing in the ears.

TikTokers are praising brown noise’s ability to clear the mind

“Brown noise is so much better than white noise. My brain is quiet for the first time,” @rnbw.infinity.nikki wrote on a TikTok video.

“If you’re wondering, brown noise cured my ADHD, why? I don’t know. What I do know is that anytime I put it on I’m sucked into a vortex of hyper-focus and the world just makes sense,” @htizz said in a clip.

The trauma counselor @ask.courtney claimed that brown noise has “been shown to soothe brains with trauma and ADHD” and that it can “decrease racing thoughts, calm the mind and allow for you to focus more clearly on a task.”
