Broncos' Harris hints about moving on in free agency

It’s hard to imagine Chris Harris playing anywhere but with the Denver Broncos, yet this idea is quickly growing into a real possibility.

Harris, who has emerged as arguably the NFL’s best slot cornerback of the past decade, hinted about what lies ahead during his impending free agency.

The 30-year-old drew trade interest before the 2019 deadline, but the Broncos couldn’t make a deal come to fruition.

It appears that Harris may’ve played his last game with the Broncos.

“I think that’s the direction right now,” Harris said via The Athletic’s Nicki Jhabvala, when asked about moving on from the Broncos. “I think everybody deserves to see what they’re worth, and I deserve it at this point. I think I worked my tail off for nine years, I gave the city every ounce of effort that I could give and, shoot, it’s time to see what everybody else thinks about me.”

Harris quickly added that it’s up to Broncos general manager John Elway on whether the team wants to retain him.

“That’s not a question for me, though,” he said. “You gotta ask John Elway that. People put it on me. It’s not me. You know? It’s not on me. They make the decisions of what they want to do.

“If they want me back, then I’ll be back.”

Harris played an instrumental role in the Broncos’ victory over the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50, while earning four Pro Bowl selections during his nine-year career spent exclusively with the franchise after going undrafted in 2011. If Harris leaves, Von Miller will be the last vestige of the Broncos’ suffocating defense that slowed down Cam Newton during his MVP season.
