Brock Osweiler back in for Texans as officials remove Tom Savage

Turns out Tony Romo wasn’t the only former starter in the state of Texas who got a bit of run this Sunday. Brock Osweiler, who lost his job quarterbacking the Houston Texans to Tom Savage two weeks ago, was pressed into emergency duty after an injury to Savage.

On the first play of the second quarter against the Tennessee Titans, Savage dove into a pile on a quarterback sneak, and as officials disentangled the pile, they motioned for Savage to head to the sideline. This is part of the NFL’s concussion protocol, where officials can call for a player to undergo testing.

Savage and head coach Bill O’Brien were visibly irritated by the order, but Savage had to go to the locker room regardless for testing.

Savage returned to the sideline during the second quarter, cleared to return, and came in long enough to take a knee just before the half. However, during halftime, Savage apparently underwent re-evaluation and was deemed to have a concussion, and was ruled out for the remainder of the game.

As for Osweiler, he ended his first drive by getting sacked on a fourth down. So, same as it ever was. Emphatically not the quarterback situation the AFC South champion Texans want heading into the playoffs.
