Brighton vs Chelsea LIVE: Premier League latest score and goal updates as Hakim Ziyech hits opener

Follow live updates as Brighton host Chelsea in the Premier League tonight. Thomas Tuchel’s side are looking to respond to their 1-0 defeat to Manchester City on Saturday, a result which left the Blues 13 points behind the Premier League leaders in the table and the Chelsea manager conceding that their title hopes are out of their hands.

In any case, Chelsea are without a win in three in the Premier League, a run which started with a 1-1 draw at home to Brighton in late December, with Danny Welbeck’s late header rescuing a point for Graham Potter’s side. Although Chelsea have won three matches in cup competitions since the New Year, it leaves them still looking for their first Premier League win of 2022.

Brighton, meanwhile, have been given a lift following recent wins over Brentford and Everton and Potter’s side sit ninth in the table and on a run of four games unbeaten. Brighton’s form this season has left Potter linked with the vacant position at Everton following the sacking of Rafael Benitez, but the Englishman has insisted he is happy at what he called “one of the best-run football clubs in the Premier League”. Tonight’s fixture is the last Premier League match standing after Watford’s trip to Burnley was postponed. Follow live updates from Brighton vs Chelsea below:

12 mins: Cucurella’s early pass into the box for Welbeck doesn’t come off and Kepa Arrizabalaga is quickly off his line to scoop up the loose ball.

Here come the teams. Cesar Azpilicueta leads out Chelsea. Kepa Arrizabalaga is once again in goal with Edouard Mendy at the Africa Cup of Nations. He’ll want to get a clean sheet under his belt.

Adam Webster captains Brighton. There’s a good atmosphere around the Amex Stadium, the Seagulls are in good form, can they take some points away from Chelsea tonight?

Brighton vs Chelsea: Pre-game thoughts of Graham Potter

19:55 , Michael Jones

Brighton boss, Graham Potter spoke to BT Sport before kick off to talk about what he expects from tonight’s game. He said:

We’ve slightly changed. As always, it’s a different game. We had a good performance at Stamford Bridge but it doesn’t count for anything tonight.

“Results help because it gives you a bit of confidence and belief. I don’t think too much has changed since last year. It’s amazing what a bit of belief does. We’ve had a few more goals and we believe in what we’re doing.

“We know we have a really tough game tonight. The Premier League is tough so you have to keep going until the end.”

Since Thomas Tuchel took charge of Chelsea, the Blues have only conceded an average of 0.6 goals per game (41 in 65) and have kept a clean sheet in 54% of their outings (35/65); both the best figures of any team across the big five European leagues in this period.

Brighton vs Chelsea: Warm-ups

Brighton vs Chelsea: Thomas Tuchel ‘very confident’ he can see out Chelsea contract running to 2024

19:45 , Michael Jones

Thomas Tuchel feels “very confident” he can complete his current Chelsea FC contract that runs until 2024.

The German boss is approaching one year at the Stamford Bridge helm, in which time he has led the Blues to the Champions League and European Super Cup titles, and the FA Cup final.

The Blues trail runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City by 13 points after Saturday’s 1-0 loss at the Etihad Stadium however, with expectations of a genuine title challenge dashed after frustrating recent results.

Chelsea only had seven touches in Manchester City’s penalty area on Saturday, their fewest in a league match for seven years. Romelu Lukaku missed a big chance against the league leaders and will want to rectify that with a goal tonight.

Brighton vs Chelsea

Brighton’s tally of 28 points from 20 matches is their highest at this stage of a top-flight campaign since 1981-82.

But, they have won just two of their 14 Premier League fixtures on a Tuesday, beating Crystal Palace in December 2018 and Manchester City last May.

Brighton vs Chelsea: Romelu Lukaku is right, he is not an easy fit in Chelsea’s system

19:36 , Michael Jones

It is tempting to wonder what might have been if, at the start of the second half at the Etihad on Saturday, the only shot on target that Chelsea managed all afternoon had been placed around the onrushing Ederson rather than easily within his reach.

Maybe Thomas Tuchel would have taken more positives from the performance, maybe Manchester City would even have lost, maybe there would still have been a sliver of intrigue for us to savour in the final four months of this Premier League title race.

Maybe Romelu Lukaku would have taken the first step on his long road back to something approaching redemption, too.

The narrative almost demanded that, very much against the run of play, he should convert that golden one-on-one opportunity to put his side ahead - not only to repair some of the damage done by last month’s explosive interview to Sky Sports Italia, but also to damage a club that he revealed he had almost joined, who offered him much more money than Chelsea did, by the way.

Brighton vs Chelsea: Werner on Brighton

19:33 , Michael Jones

Timo Werner says that Brighton play football like a big named club and play ‘without fear’ making tonight’s fixture a tough one for Chelsea. He said:

When you play against a team like Brighton it is very dangerous because they have not the biggest name, but they play football like the big names.

“When they played here and we drew against them, I was sitting in the stands because I was injured, and I was very impressed with how they play football.

“They have a very good style of football, direct up front and also playing without fear. So they are a very good team and you have to be very careful to play against them because they can switch the speed up very quickly.”

Brighton vs Chelsea

19:29 , Michael Jones

Chelsea have dropped points in eight of their last 12 league games, keeping just two clean sheets.

They are winless in three top-flight matches for the first time under Thomas Tuchel and could fail to score in back-to-back away league fixtures for the first time since August 2019.

Brighton vs Chelsea

19:26 , Michael Jones

Brighton are unbeaten in four league matches, earning eight points - as many as they managed in their previous 11 fixtures.

The Seagulls have scored seven league goals after the 80th minute this season. It has been their only goal of the game on every occasion.

Brighton vs Chelsea: Werner says Chelsea can bounce-back from City defeat

19:21 , Michael Jones

Forward Timo Werner admits that it will be difficult to catch Manchester City in the Premier League but says Chelsea are looking to bounce-back from their 1-0 defeat at the weekend.

The Blues are still involved in every cup competition and Werner says this is enough motivation to keep the players upbeat moving forwards. He said:

We still have the belief that in the Premier League it can change very quickly, but of course we also know how good [Man] City is, especially in the league, and when they have a lead like this they are very hard to beat.,

“We have enough to win this year still, we are in the Champions League, we are in the final of the Carabao Cup, we are still in the FA Cup, we have the Club World Cup coming up. We have a lot of chances to win titles this year so there is no time to let our heads go down because of what happened at the weekend.”

Brighton vs Chelsea: Rescheduled Brighton date is very hard to understand says Tuchel

19:18 , Michael Jones

Thomas Tuchel has admitted struggling to fathom the rescheduling of Chelsea’s Premier League trip to Brighton

The Blues travel to the Amex Stadium on Tuesday, with the clash shifted from February 8 – when Chelsea will be at the Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi.

But now boss Tuchel has been left wondering why the rearranged Brighton match could not have been staged a day later on Wednesday, January 19th.

Brighton vs Chelsea: Head-to-head

19:14 , Michael Jones

Brighton are winless in 16 attempts against Chelsea since beating them in the FA Cup in their first meeting in January 1933.

Chelsea’s 13-match unbeaten league run in this fixture is their longest against a particular opponent without ever losing. Three of the last four Premier League encounters have been drawn, including 1-1 at Stamford Bridge on 29th December.

Elsewhere in the Premier League

19:11 , Michael Jones

Burnley were due to face Watford in another Premier League game tonight but the match at Turf Moor has been postponed because of a high number of players with injuries and Covid-19 in Burnley’s squad.

Sean Dyche’s side had requested postponement on Monday, saying there were only 10 first-team players in training and a Premier League statement offered an apology acknowledging that postponements ‘disappoint clubs and fans.’

This is the second time the fixture has been postponed as it was originally due to be played in December but was called off originally because of an outbreak at Watford.

Brighton vs Chelsea: Team changes

19:08 , Michael Jones

Graham Potter makes three changes to the Brighton team that drew 1-1 with Crystal Palace last time out. Neal Maupay and Leandro Trossard drop to the bench with Adam Lallana out through injury. Danny Welbeck, Tariq Lamptey and Steven Alzate are the three men to come in.

Thomas Tuchel also makes three changes to the Chelsea team that lost 1-0 to Manchester City at the weekend. Mason Mount and Callum Hudson-Odoi are recalled with Jorginho partnering N’Golo Kante in the midfield. Malang Sarr, Christian Pulisic and Mateo Kovacic drop out of the starting XI.

Brighton vs Chelsea: Everton appoint Ferguson amid Potter and Lampard links

18:56 , Michael Jones

Everton have announced that Duncan Ferguson has been appointed as caretaker manager for the Club’s upcoming games.

Ferguson will be supported by John Ebbrell and Leighton Baines, along with goalkeeping coach Alan Kelly.

It is the second time Ferguson has taken caretaker charge at the club, having guided the Blues to five points from three league games against Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal in December 2019.

An announcement on a permanent managerial appointment will be made in due course with the Club being linked with ex-Chelsea boss Frank Lampard, Derby manager Wayne Rooney, and Brighton boss Graham Potter.

Brighton vs Chelsea: Recent results

18:53 , Michael Jones

Brighton are sitting pretty in ninth place in the Premier League and are looking to move level on points with Wolves (8th). Last time out they had 19 shots against Crystal Palace but couldn’t find the target. Conor Gallagher gave the visitors the lead with 20 minutes to play and the Seagulls were rescued by a late own goal from Joachim Andersen to draw 1-1.

Chelsea have only won one of their last six Premier League games, with one defeat and four draws. That run has seen them drop 13 points behind league leaders Manchester City and seemingly out of the title race. Three points tonight will give Thomas Tuchel’s men hope that they can claw back some ground on City but they will need to have an almost perfect run in if they are going to overcome that deficit.

Brighton vs Chelsea: Graham Potter happy at ‘ambitious’ Brighton after links to Everton job

18:49 , Michael Jones

Brighton boss Graham Potter insists he is very happy at one of the Premier League’s “best-run clubs” amid reports linking him with the vacant Everton job.

The Toffees are searching for a new manager after sacking Rafael Benitez following just one win from 13 top-flight games.

Potter, whose contract runs until the summer of 2025, has impressed since arriving at the Amex Stadium in 2019 and has the Seagulls flying high in ninth place ahead of Tuesday’s visit of Chelsea.

Brighton vs Chelsea: Potter not going anywhere

18:45 , Michael Jones

Following the sacking of Rafa Benitez from Everton on Sunday rumours have been spreading about the next manager for the Merseyside club.

Former England stars Frank Lampard and Wayne Rooney are apparantly both high on the shortlist and there was talk of Brighton manager Graham Potter, possibly switching Premier League clubs.

Potter has done a more than admirable job at Brighton and many feel his next move, when it comes, will be to one of the bigger clubs in the Premier League.

However, before the rumours got out of hand Potter, who has been on the last two shortlists, ruled himself out of the running, saying he believes he is at “one of the best-run football clubs in the Premier League, with a fantastic owner, chairman, CEO, sports director”.

Brighton vs Chelsea: Thomas Tuchel explains decision to bench Mason Mount against Man City

18:40 , Michael Jones

It was a little surprising when Thomas Tuchel named Chelsea’s starting XI for their crucial Premier League fixture against Manchester City to see Mason Mount’s name on the bench.

Mount has been in good touch scoring seven goals and making six assists in the league campaign so far and would have wanted to play in such a big game - one that had potentially decisive ramifications for Chelsea’s title race.

Tuchel revealed that the decision to start Mount on the bench was a tactical one and it did not go down well with the midfielder. Tuchel said:

I get them and this is absolutely normal and it’s still within Mason’s character of kindness and being polite and being respectful. So there is no harm in this, but I get the eyes, I get the look, of course,

“He is here to play these kinds of matches, but we were simply opting for runners. We thought we could break the line more often with Hakim [Ziyech] as a left-footer on the left side and going for Christian [Pulisic] on the right side because the arrival of Christian in the box is normally a bit more offensive and he is a bit more of a runner than Mason.

“We expected the spaces more behind the last line, not in front of the back four of City. So that was the decision.’

It will be interesting to see if Mount starts against Brighton tonight. The team news is out in around 20 minutes time.

Brighton vs Chelsea: Tariq Lamptey targeting full return for Brighton against former club Chelsea

18:33 , Michael Jones

Brighton boss Graham Potter is hopeful Tariq Lamptey will be fit to face former club Chelsea after suffering an injury setback ahead of the 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace.

Seagulls defender Lamptey was a surprise omission from Albion’s starting XI for Friday evening’s clash with the Eagles due to a slight groin issue.

The England Under-21 international managed a lively second-half cameo as a late Joachim Andersen own goal prevented Palace snatching victory courtesy of Conor Gallagher’s seventh strike of the season.

Tariq Lamptey may start for Brighton after coming on as a substitute at the weekend following a groin issue but Lewis Dunk, Shane Duffy and Adam Lallana will miss out.

Yves Bissouma and Enock Mwepu are also missing from the Brighton squad.

For Chelsea, Trevoh Chalobah, Reece James and Ben Chilwell continue their recoveries from respective injuries while Andreas Christensen misses out with Covid-19.
