Brewers acquire White Sox closer Joakim Soria to strengthen their bullpen

The Milwaukee Brewers made their first official steps into the pre-deadline trade market on Thursday, adding Chicago White Sox closer Joakim Soria to their bullpen.

In return, the White Sox are getting pitchers Kodi Medeiros and Wilber Pérez, who are both in the Brewers minor league system.

Soria has had a great year for the White Sox. He has a 2.56 ERA over 38.2 innings, with 49 strikeouts and 16 saves. He has an 11.4 strikeout to walk ratio, which is the best mark he’s had in nearly a decade. Here’s a particularly mind-blowing stat.

And Soria’s doing it all at age 34.

The Brewers need several pieces to improve their chances of making the playoffs. A reliever is definitely on the list, but it’s not at the top. The Brewers bullpen has a 3.31 ERA, which is the fifth-best in baseball. For the first 2-3 months of the season, that bullpen was an absolute monster.

But the last month has seen things change. The Brewers have the eighth-worst bullpen in the majors over the last 30 days (with a 4.98 ERA), and they’ve started to slip in the standings. Just before the All-Star break, the Brewers got swept by the surging Pirates and went from being one game up in the National League Central to being 2.5 games behind.

The Brewers are clearly feeling the pressure, since now they’re looking at second place after nearly two months in first. Going out to get a reliever is a great start, but they have more work to do. They were heavily involved in the Manny Machado trade talks, but lost out to the Los Angeles Dodgers and could still use an infielder. And since they also need a some starting pitching help, this is probably not the last time we’ll see the Brewers involved in a trade before the July 31 deadline.
