It usually doesn’t take any prompting for Bret Bielema to say something humorous.

But on Monday at SEC Media Days, it was SEC commissioner Greg Sankey who set the stage for the Arkansas coach.

The last few days have been quite hectic for Bielema. His wife gave birth to the couple’s first child, Briella, just three days ago, so he’s not operating on a whole lot of sleep.

Folks from all across college football reached out in recent days to congratulate the Bielemas, including Sankey. However, the exchange between Bielema and Sankey was a little different than the others.

Sankey explain what happened when introducing Bielema to the assembled press:

“I texted congratulations to Bret. All of a sudden my phone said he was FaceTiming me,” Sankey explained. “That’s never happened. I never FaceTimed with a head football coach in the SEC. I decided to answer the phone.

“He said, ‘Why are you calling me?’ I said, ‘Why are you calling me?’ I thought he was going to share this moment with his wife and his daughter with the conference commissioner, but he said, ‘I was just leaving Chipotle. I didn’t mean to call you. It was a mistake.”

How funny is that? To make it even better, Bielema provided a bit of context — including his wife’s Chipotle order — to the situation, which was a classic case of butt-dialing.

“I did text him. ‘That’s pretty cool, I was thinking to myself,’ Bielema said. “My wife wanted a double veggie bowl from Chipotle — trying to get an endorsement right there — I was walking down, and I recognized the FaceTime, pulled it out and I see Greg Sankey’s name. I said, ‘This is pretty cool, the commissioner is FaceTiming me. That’s pretty neat.’ He said, ‘Why were you calling me?’ I said, ‘I apologize, I must have butt-dialed you.’ That was a unique experience.”

Bielema said he received a pretty big outpouring — about 500 messages — after Briella was born. It’s been a whirlwind for the coach since then, but he was still his usual sharp-tongued self on Monday. However, he said you shouldn’t expect him to be an expert on parenting just yet.

“I’m 48 hours into this,” he said. “I can’t say I’m well-versed.”
