Breaking down all the major title races as the club season winds down

It’s May. It’s Title Time (FC Yahoo trademark pending).

But you’re busy. You haven’t been watching as much soccer as you would’ve liked this season. Because there isn’t enough time in the world to watch all the soccer you’d like to see. If you’d also like to remain gainfully employed, stay in a healthy relationship and keep a roof over your head and food in your belly, that is.

So your trusty soccer blog is coming to the rescue. Let’s break down where we are in the 10 major leagues winding down.

Argentina

Things are tight down in the Argentine Primera Division’s monstrous 30-team top division. Boca Juniors leads the pack with 49 points, four ahead of second-place Newell’s Old Boys. But the top eight teams are all within eight points with seven games to go. Boca’s arch-rivals River Plate sit in fifth place with 42 points and a game in hand.

Chelsea is the champion-elect of the Premier League. With three games left, it has opened a seven-point gap over second-place Tottenham Hotspur. On Friday, the Blues could finish it off at West Bromwich Albion. If not, any other win will do.

France

Paris Saint-Germain’s four-year run as French champions looks to end as Monaco’s high-flying kindergarten holds a three-point Ligue 1 lead with a game in hand and much the better goal difference. Monaco also has a game in hand. So its hypothetical six-point lead should be insurmountable.

Germany

Bayern Munich has the Bundesliga wrapped up already, for a fifth straight title. Yawn.

Italy

Not only is Juventus in its second Champions League final in three years, but it is about to win a sixth straight Serie A title. Three rounds of games remain and Juve has seven points on second-place Roma and eight on third-place Napoli. Game over.

Netherlands

This one is coming down to the wire. After leading every single round of the season, Feyenoord has let its lead over Ajax – which has a habit of coming from behind to win Eredivisie titles on the final day – shrink to a single point with one game to go. Feyenoord is at home to ninth-place Heracles. Ajax is away at 12th-place Willem II.

Portugal

Benfica is about to clinch a fourth straight Primeira Liga title, which it has never accomplished before in its storied past. The Eagles hold a five-point lead over second-place FC Porto with two games to go.

Scotland

Celtic has a 27-point lead over Aberdeen with three games to go in the Scottish Premier League. So … yeah. That’s six straight for the Bhoys.

Spain

Real Madrid hasn’t won La Liga in four seasons, with Barcelona winning three and even plucky cross-town rivals taking one. Real, which could win a third Champions League title in four years, also holds the inside track for La Liga. While Barca is tied on points and holds the head-to-head advantage, Real has a game in hand. That means if it wins two and ties one of its three remaining games, it wins the title no matter what Barca does.

Turkey

The Super Lig is shaping up for a big finish as Besiktas and Istanbul Basaksehir are just two points apart with four games to go. Meanwhile, Fenerbahce lurks in third place eight points back.
