Boise State's latest attempt at a Statue of Liberty play backfired immensely
This ain’t the Fiesta Bowl, Boise State.
The Broncos stormed out to an easy 24-0 lead on Oregon in the Las Vegas Bowl on Saturday before winning 38-28. With a perfectly executed Statue of Liberty play, Boise State was going to go up 31-0 before halftime and make the game a bigger rout than it was.
The play was not perfectly executed like it was in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl, perhaps the most famous game in Boise State history. In fact, Saturday’s attempt turned into a fumble, which was returned by Oregon linebacker Troy Dye for a touchdown.
The 14-point swing wasn’t the craziest thing to end the half either. As soon as it got the ball back, Boise State flew down the field again. But Oregon intercepted Boise State quarterback Brett Rypien for the second time. And that interception, by DB Tyree Robinson, turned into a 100-yard pick-six and a halftime lead that was suddenly 24-14.
Robinson’s pick was the seventh turnover of the first half. Boise State had three of them and Oregon’s offense had four, including a pick-six thrown by Ducks quarterback Justin Herbert.
The second half was far calmer. Boise State scored an early TD in the half and then closed the game with Ryan Wolpin’s second TD of the night as Oregon couldn’t come back.
There was this, however. Crazily enough, the punches didn’t draw any personal foul penalties.
The win means Boise State finishes the season 11-3. Oregon ends the year at 7-6.
