Blue Jays lose Matt Shoemaker for season with torn ACL

The Toronto Blue Jays appeared to have found themselves a bargain when they signed Matt Shoemaker to a one-year deal this offseason. He came out of the gate looking better than he had in years, posting four straight solid starts — good for three wins and a 1.57 ERA.

Things took a turn for the absolute worst on Saturday, as Shoemaker fell to the ground in the middle of a rundown against the Oakland Athletics.

He was extremely animated in his anger after going down with the injury, and on Sunday evening it was revealed that his anger was warranted.

Shoemaker was immediately placed on the injured list with a ‘knee sprain’ after the game, and the MRI on Sunday revealed a torn ACL, which would bring an end to his season already.

It’s terrible news for Shoemaker, who had been limited to 21 starts combined over the previous three seasons due to injuries. He suffered a fractured skull and concussion in 2016 — which required emergency surgery to stop bleeding — while a lingering forearm issue required surgeries in 2017 and 2018.

The 32-year-old was quite emotional while speaking to the media about the injury on Sunday night.

“I know I seem pretty upset right now, which I am, but I’ve had bumps in the road before and I’m just going to fight through it,” he said, according to Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith. “That’s just who I am. It’s just really upsetting right now.”

The Blue Jays now have decisions to make regarding a pair of holes to their rotation, after also losing Aaron Sanchez to a broken fingernail on Sunday afternoon.
