Blue Jays extend manager Charlie Montoyo's contract through 2023 season

The Toronto Blue Jays are locking in their skipper for another couple of years at least.

The Blue Jays announced on Friday that they have extended manager Charlie Montoyo's contract through the 2023 season. Sportsnet's Shi Davidi reports the new deal includes team options for two more years after that.

The 56-year-old Montoyo is entering his fourth year at the helm of the Blue Jays after taking over a team in the eye of a rebuild back in 2019. Montoyo's original deal with the Jays ran for three years with a club option for 2022, which was exercised last year.

Following a 95-loss first season in Toronto, the Puerto Rico native led the Blue Jays to the expanded playoffs of 2020, when Toronto played its home games out of Sahlen Field, home of their triple-A affiliate in Buffalo, N.Y. The Blue Jays followed that up with 91 wins in a nomadic 2021 season that featured three different home cities and a heartbreaking postseason miss by a single game due to an absolutely stacked American League East Division.

This will be Montoyo's first full season of hosting home games in Toronto since his first season with the Blue Jays.

Needless to say, things look a lot different this time around.

A successful rebuild saw youngsters such as Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette and Alek Manoah blossom into major-league stars and brought in established heroes like Hyun-Jin Ryu, George Springer and Matt Chapman. Now, the Blue Jays are projected to lead the American League in wins for the 2022 regular season and are a popular pick to reach the World Series.

Montoyo's career record of 190-194 as a major-league manager — all of them with the Jays — may look underwhelming on paper, but it is doubtless about to turn around with a star-studded lineup hungry to make a deep run.
