Blackhawks, Corey Crawford agree to 6-year extension

CBC

The Chicago Blackhawks announced Monday they've agreed to a six-year contract extension with Stanley Cup-winning goaltender Corey Crawford.

Multiple reports said the deal, which keeps Crawford under club control through the 2019-20 NHL season, is worth $36 million US.

The 28-year-old goalie is due to make $2.5 million in 2013-14, the last year on his current contract. He would have been eligible for unrestricted free agency at season's end.

Crawford posted a 1.84 goals-against average and .932 save percentage in 23 playoff games this year to help Chicago to the Stanley Cup title.

In the regular season, the Montreal native went 19-5-5 with a 1.94 GAA and .926 save percentage as he and Ray Emery earned the William M. Jennings Trophy as the goalie tandem with the league's fewest goals allowed. By playoff time, Crawford was the clear No. 1 man, and he played every minute of the Blackhawks' championship run.

A second-round pick of Chicago's in the 2003 NHL draft, Crawford is one of the candidates to play in net for Team Canada at next year's Sochi Olympics.
