Black Opal has been a pillar of the Black beauty industry for decades. Long before inclusion was on every beauty brand’s mind, Black Opal was providing high-quality makeup options for Black women. And the brand’s work in the space hasn’t slowed in the last 25 years.

Black Opal was created in 1994 to celebrate Black skin in a white-dominated commercial beauty industry. First beginning with complexion products, the brand has now broadened their range to include a full line of makeup and skincare. Though the cruelty-free company sells products designed for the Black community, some products can be used on a variety of skin tones.

In Sept. 2019, Black Opal officially became a Black-owned beauty brand for the first time in its 25-year history. Though Black women were always involved in the business, a white man founded the company inspired by his Black wife’s struggles to find makeup. With Black women now at the helm of the company, the future continues to look promising for this staple brand.

Some stand-out products from Black Opal include the True Color Illuminating Powder, which is a beaming highlight for any skin tone, and the True Color Skin Perfecting Stick Foundation, which includes SPF 15, vitamin C and vitamin E.

With a low price point and high-performing products, Black Opal has been around for more than two decades for a reason. Even with inclusion (slowly) becoming a core value in the makeup industry, there will always be a space for brands serving Black women solely and unapologetically.

Check out some of Black Opal’s products, which arguably started a movement toward more inclusion in beauty.
