Bianca Andreescu wins Lou Marsh Award

Bianca Andreescu, the 19-year-old who captured the country’s attention with wins at the Rogers Cup and U.S. Open, has been named the winner of the 2019 Lou Marsh Award.

Andreescu became the first Canadian ever to win a Grand Slam, defeating Serena Williams by a score of 6-3, 7-5 in the final.

The Thornhill, Ont., native started the year outside of the top-100 in the WTA rankings. But after a breakout year, she’s now ranked fifth in the world. Along with the U.S. Open title, Andreescu won her first WTA title earlier this year, defeating four top-20 ranked athletes on her way to the Indian Wells Open trophy.

Andreescu becomes the first tennis player to win the Lou Marsh Award, which is given annually to Canada’s top athlete of the year.

The other top candidates for the award were Atlanta Braves pitcher and Calgary’s own Mike Soroka, as well as Smith Falls, Ont., native Brooke Henderson — who was able to tie the record for most LPGA/PGA tournament wins by a Canadian this year.

Recent winners of the award include freestyle skiier Mikaël Kingsbury, Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto and Olympic swimmer Penny Oleksiak.
