Bianca Andreescu retires from WTA Finals match with injured knee

After shocking the world with a thrilling win at the U.S. Open, it looks like Bianca Andreescu’s breakout season will come to an abrupt end.

The Canadian sensation, who entered the WTA Finals as the No. 4 ranked player in the world, was forced to retire from her match against No. 2-ranked Karolina Pliskova on Wednesday with an injured knee.

And judging from the conversation she had with her trainer during the first set, it sounds like Andreescu’s knee injury has the potential to be significant.

Andreescu appeared to be in good shape as the match began, but the Mississauga native was seen limping toward the bench after she lunged at a forehand in the third game. She was struggling to move and keep up with Pliskova, who was putting together a strong service game en route to winning the match 6-3.

Andreescu was in tears as she discussed the injury with her coach, Sylvain Bruneau, who encouraged the 19-year-old to push through the pain during the first set.

“I don’t want to stop,” Andreescu responded, but the injury eventually became too much for the Canadian to overcome.

Andreescu has been eliminated from the WTA Finals after retiring from her match, capping off her breakout season with an unfortunate dose of heartbreak.
