The Best Indie Jewelry Brands You Need on Your Radar

To help bolster small, independent jewelry designers, Yahoo Style rounded up four need-to-know designers from the U.S., Israel, and Singapore. Unlike fashion designers, jewelry designers often don’t have the same opportunities to showcase their new seasonal collections during Fashion Week, where they are presented with a global audience consisting of esteemed buyers, editors, and stylists. That is not to say it’s not possible, but it is a much harder and slower process.

Ahead, take a look at four breakout brands that are giving new life to what modern, artful jewelry should look like. Think along the lines of elegant, minimalist jewelry styles that would complement any collection by modernist fashion pioneers Céline, The Row, and Lemaire.

Many pieces start at less than $100 — offering jewelry that is not only sophisticated, but fairly affordable. Scroll down to learn more about these talented group of designers who should be on your radar.

Knobbly Studio is a jewelry brand based out of Jaffa, Israel — the artsy sister town of Tel Aviv. It is founded and led by designer Gittit Szwarc, who is completely self-taught. Interestingly enough, she started her career as a Capoeira teacher — a type of martial arts. Szwarc’s jewels look and feel lightweight and take organically shaped forms, as seen in her latest collection with Zurich-based tattoo artist Laurie Franck. The outcome is Szwarc’s interpretation of Franck’s single-nude female tattoos (as seen in the above Nude No. 21 Long monocle earring made of 9k gold).

Szwarc’s core collection features a variety of earrings in geometric shapes available in gold and silver, as well as delicate chokers and paper-thin cuffs. Knobbly Studio’s jewelry starts as low as $72, with the higher-priced items reaching $125.

Young Frankk was founded in 2012 by designer Christine Young and is based in Richmond, Va. Every piece is handmade by the Young Frankk studio. You will find among Frankk’s collection a series of swirl gold earrings, spherical-shaped pendant necklaces, and delicate gold cuffs with small orbs. Available both in gold-plated and sterling silver, the jewelry is priced between $68 to $200. Frankk’s designs are unique, yet have a simplicity to them that makes them wearable on an everyday basis.

Odette New York was founded by Brooklyn-based designer Jennifer Sarkilahti in 2006. The jewelry design process at Odette is quite unique and elaborate. Each design originates from a pencil sketch, and then is carved into wax before being cast into metal. Sarkilahti’s background is in fine art; hence her emphasis on geometric and organic shapes. Most of the Odette New York collection is priced within the $100 to $200 range.

Common Muse was founded by Singaporean designer Jel Ng. Her jewelry designs feel sophisticated, modern, clean-cut, and very versatile. You can easily pair them with a crisp white button-up shirt or wear them over a knit dress or silky blouse — the options are plentiful. Common Muse features an assortment of ball-drop and chain-linked earrings in sterling silver to simple gold “egg-shaped brooch” necklaces. Best news? You can score most of the brand’s pieces for less than $40. Check out the Common Muse Instagram page for fashionable ways to style the jewelry with your everyday wardrobe.
