Bergeron reportedly returning to Bruins on one-year deal

It looks like the Boston Bruins will have their captain back for one last dance.

According to Joe McDonald of the Worcester Telegram, star forward Patrice Bergeron seems intent on returning to the Bruins on a one-year deal.

Bergeron scored 25 goals and registered 40 assists for 65 points in 73 points this season, while putting up seven points in seven playoff games as well.

The 36-year-old was awarded the 2021-2022 Frank J. Selke Trophy, given to "the forward who demonstrates the most skill in the defensive component of the game," for a record fifth time.

Selected by the Bruins with the 45th-overall pick of the 2003 NHL Draft, Bergeron has 400 goals and 582 assists for 982 points in 1,126 career games, all in black and gold. He played a crucial role as a member of the 2011 Stanley Cup winning team.

The L'Ancienne Lorette, Quebec native is coming off of an eight-year, $55-million contract that saw him earn an annual salary of $6.875-million.

While the Bruins and their fans will be relieved to hear that their captain won't be retiring just yet, the team is facing a sort of identity crisis at the moment, with the upcoming season steeped in uncertainty.

Boston parted ways with head coach Bruce Cassidy last week after he guided the Bruins to six-consecutive playoff appearances, including a Cup Final in 2019. After a first-round exit at the hands of the Carolina Hurricanes this year, the team don't seem to have a good enough squad to compete with the top of the Eastern Conference and make the most of a talented core.

Two pillars of that core, forward Brad Marchand and defenseman Charlie McAvoy, are slated to miss the first few months of the next season, while leading goalscorer David Pastrnak is due to be re-signed and is reportedly unsure whether he would like to stay in Boston past next year.
