Bengals' Vontaze Burfict flips double birds to Bills fans, but what set him off?

Late in Sunday’s game between the Cincinnati Bengals and Buffalo Bills, we got the full Vontaze Burfict experience in one play.

The Bengals linebacker made a good stop on third down, forcing quarterback Tyrod Taylor out of bounds for a 3-yard sack. Then Burfict made a gesture that almost surely will get him fined by the NFL.

Check out the play and then the aftermath as Burfict was near the Bills fans behind the Bengals’ bench. First Burfict gives the one-finger gesture with his left hand then throws up the right middle finger for good measure.

Was he provoked? One report suggested that a Bills fans dumped a beer on Burfict at some point prior to this moment. That’s something we can’t yet verify.

Even so, it’s not going to matter; the NFL is likely to issue a fine for the unsavory gesture. And in a way, it’s a good metaphor for the undisciplined Bengals, who fell to 3-6-1 a year after going 12-4 and watching A.J. Green go down Sunday with what appeared to be a season-ending hamstring injury.

And it also sums up Burfict, a talented player who too often makes boneheaded decisions and exhibits questionable judgment. He’s the kind of maddeningly frustrating talent who could help get his head coach fired.

But since we’re talking double birds from hot-headed linebackers in Buffalo, we just couldn’t resist going back to this gem from the good old days.
