Bears GM Ryan Poles will lead search for new head coach
The Chicago Bears will be conducting a search for a new head coach after firing Matt Eberflus last Friday following a brutal six-game losing streak with countless coaching errors in the mix. But there have been plenty of questions about who will conduct the coaching search this offseason.
We got an answer during the first press conference since Eberflus' firing, where Bears president Kevin Warren confirmed that Ryan Poles will remain the team's general manager and also serve as "the point person" on hiring the next head coach. Poles and Warren will "work in tandem" during a search that will be exhaustive, organized and diligent.
According to various reports from NFL insiders, that search is expected to include some of the top candidates in this coaching cycle, including Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel and Washington Commanders offensive coordinator -- and Williams' former quarterbacks coach at USC -- Kliff Kingsbury.
Interim head coach Thomas Brown will also get an opportunity, specifically in these final five games, as he continues to develop rookie quarterback Caleb Williams and especially if he can unite this locker room.
Warren believes the Bears' coaching vacancy will be the "most coveted" in the NFL this offseason, where there are currently three openings (Bears, New York Jets, New Orleans Saints) with several other vacancies likely to emerge.
