Baseball Roundup: Weatherford, Byron Nelson and top-ranked Grapevine get eliminated

Flower Mound (33-10-2) d. Weatherford (32-11)

Weatherford pitcher Kannon Kemp tossed a complete game scattering nine hits and allowing three runs with a walk and a strikeout to give the Kangaroos a 5-3 win over Flower Mound and even a Class 6A Region I Semifinal series at 1-1 on Saturday at Dallas Baptist University.

Joel Gonzales highlighted a four-run top of the sixth inning for Weatherford with a bases-loaded single to left driving in two. Wyatt Perdue went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and an RBI for the Roos.

Flower Mound bounced back to take the series with an 8-2 win in Game 3 later in the day to advance.

Jaguars’ designated hitter Adrian Rodriguez, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored, singled in a pair in the third and added a single to left in a four-run fourth to drive in another run.

Flower Mound’s Zack James tossed six innings of three-hit ball in Game 1 on Friday, won by the Jaguars 9-0. Cole Ridenour belted a three-run home run to highlight a five-run third for Flower Mound.

Denton Guyer (33-11) d. Trophy Club Nelson (22-17)

Denton Guyer eliminated Trophy Club Nelson with an 8-5 win in Game 1 on Friday and a 10-6 victory in Game 2 on Saturday in a Class 6A Region I Semifinal series played at Southlake Carroll High School.

Lane Allen went 3-for-3 with a triple and a homer, three RBI and three runs scored in Game 1 for Guyer.

Byron Nelson built a 6-1 lead after two innings in Game 2, but Guyer stormed back behind Brad Pruett.

Pruett went 4-for-4 with four RBI including a two-run homer in the fourth inning that gave the Wildcats the lead for good at 7-6. Pruett also allowed one earned run in six innings on the mound scattering four hits and striking out four.

Lubbock-Cooper (27-17) d. Grapevine (33-7-2)

Lubbock-Cooper stunned top-ranked Grapevine, sweeping a double header on Saturday to win its Class 5A Region I Semifinal series 2-1 at Tarleton State University in Stephenville.

Grapevine took Game 1 on Friday 6-2 behind the pitching of Wes Cunningham who allowed one unearned run on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Jace Christian had a two-run single to center in a four-run second inning.

But the Pirates recovered winning 8-2 and 4-1 on Saturday behind two strong pitching performances from Jake Qualia (7IP, 5H, 2R, 2ER, 1BB, 4SO) in Game 2 and Tyler Spruiell (7IP, 3H, 1R, 0ER, 4BB, 5SO) in Game 3.

Argyle (32-9-2) d. Abilene Wylie (23-13-1)

Argyle second baseman Colton Roquemore broke open a close game in the sixth inning with a bases clearing double that lifted the Eagles to a 7-1 win over Abilene Wylie in Game 1 of their Class 5A Region I Semifinal on Thursday at Southlake Carroll High School.

Eagles’ pitcher Alex D’Angelo and Wylie’s Brady Clark were tangled in a pitcher’s duel until the sixth.

D’Angelo went six complete allowing one run, five hits and three walks while striking out four.

The Eagles finished the sweep, 11-3, in Game 2 at Abilene Christian University on Friday.

Park Prater drove in five runs with a bases clearing triple in a five-run second inning and a two-run homer in the sixth that pushed the lead to 8-1.

Reid Ross threw five strong innings for Argyle.

Stephenville (27-12-1) d. Midland Greenwood (21-16)

Stephenville broke a 2-2 tie with a four-run fifth inning as the Yellow Jackets took Game 1, 6-3, over Midland Greenwood in a Class 4A Region I Semifinal on Wednesday at Abilene Christian University.

The Jackets only managed four hits, but scored four times in the fifth. Bases-loaded walks to Haiden Rudloff and Mason Haynes, both on four pitches, a wild pitch, and an RBI by Mason Weyers who was hit by a pitch with the bases juiced.

Luke Heller got the win tossing five innings of six-hit ball allowing two earned runs with five walks and five strikeouts. Wacey Dill pitched the final two frames for Stephenville.

The Yellow Jackets started quickly in Game 2 on Saturday scoring eight runs in the first three innings to take an 8-0 lead. Eli Hiitola tripled in two runs with two out in a four-run second inning. Nate Barry followed with a triple to left to drive in Hiitola to make the score 6-0.

Gabe Elms was stellar on the mound pitching a complete game giving up five hits, two runs (one earned) with two strikeouts and one walk.

Brock (33-3-1) d. Shallowater (23-11-1)

Brock was firing on all cylinders at the plate and on the mound as the Eagles swept its Class 3A Region I Semifinal series with Shallowater at McMurry University in Abilene.

The Eagles won Game 1 on Wednesday, 7-1, scoring five runs in the top of the first to back the pitching of Ian Fuchs who went six inning allowing one earned run, four hits with six strikeouts. Fuchs also went 2-for-4 at the plate.

Cam Harris, Ty Besker, Jesse Rusinek and Jaxson Cooke all had at least one RBI in the first.

Brock scored nine runs in the first three innings in Game 2 on Thursday to complete the sweep with an 11-1 victory in five innnings.

The Eagles scored seven runs in the third. Besker doubled in two in the inning and Gavin Boedeker and Rusinek followed with RBI doubles to give the Eagles a 6-0 lead.

Rusinek handled the pitching duties in Game 2 for Brock.

Boyd (36-4) d. White Oak (28-8-2)

Braden McIntire allowed one run over five innings as the Yellowjackets took Game 1 of their Class 2A Region II Semifinal series, 7-1, over White Oak on Thursday at North Forney High School.

Aiden LeMasters was 2-for-2 with a walk for Boyd.

Eric Rogers struck out eight for the Yellowjackets in Game 2 on Friday that was stopped after five innings with Boyd leading 10-0 to complete the sweep.

LeMasters singled in the winning run to walk it off. Colton Patton was 2-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and four RBI.

McIntire went 2-for-4 with three runs scored.

Tolar (22-8-2) d. Alvord (25-9)

Talan Brown allowed one unearned run on three hits in a complete game effort as the Rattlers beat Alvord in Game 1 of their Class 2A Region II Semifinal series on Wednesday at Cleburne High School.

Reis Brown drove a pitch to center for a two run double in the Rattler’s four-run sixth inning.

Tolar competed the sweep in Game 2 with a 7-1 victory on Thursday.
