Baseball-Major League Baseball roundup

April 24 (The Sports Xchange) - The Los Angeles Angels reportedly were close Friday to a deal that would send troubled outfielder Josh Hamilton back to the Texas Rangers. MLB.com reported that the Angels were in serious trade talks with the Rangers about a potential deal that would send Hamilton to Texas, where he won the American League MVP award in 2010. Hamilton, who in February admitted to relapsing and abusing drugs and alcohol, began this season on the disabled list after he underwent right shoulder surgery on Feb. 4. Hamilton, 33, has been rehabbing the shoulder in the Houston area for the past two months, while also dealing with the issue of his self-reported relapse. After an arbiter ruled that Hamilton should not be suspended for violating his treatment program, Angels owner Arte Moreno said he would not guarantee Hamilton would ever play again for the Angels, even though Hamilton is still owed $83 million by the club. - - - The Miami Marlins placed left fielder Christian Yelich on the disabled list and recalled first baseman Justin Bour from Triple-A New Orleans. The Marlins also put catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia on the paternity list and promoted catcher Jhonatan Solano from New Orleans. Yelich had been out with a lower-back strain, a condition that cost him two weeks last season as well. The outfielder, who signed a seven-year, $49 million extension with the Marlins in March, is hitting just .200. - - - The Baltimore Orioles placed infielder Ryan Flaherty on the 15-day disabled list and recalled infielder Rey Navarro from Triple-A Norfolk. Flaherty strained his right groin running the bases in a 4-2 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday. He was hitting .300 with two homers and four RBIs in nine games this season. Navarro, 25, is a career minor-leaguer who has not played in the majors. In nine minor league seasons, he has hit .265 with 47 home runs and 363 RBIs. - - - Washington Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer jammed his thumb when he hit a grounder Thursday against the St. Louis Cardinals. Nationals manager Matt Williams pulled Scherzer after seven innings and 82 pitches. Williams said he took out Scherzer because the pitcher jammed his thumb on the swing in the fifth inning of the 4-1 loss. Scherzer, who signed a seven-year, $210 million contract in January, expects to make his next start in Atlanta on Tuesday. (Editing by Larry Fine) ))
