Baseball-Major League Baseball roundup

May 5 (The Sports Xchange) - Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Alex Cobb has been on the disabled list since spring training with forearm tightness and now it appears he might be out for the season after an MRI revealed a partial tear in an elbow ligament, the Tampa Bay Times reported Tuesday. Cobb hopes that he will be able to pitch this season after a period of rest and treatment. But if that fails, he faces Tommy John surgery, which will sideline him for all of the 2015 season and at least part of the 2016 season. - - Outfielder Cody Ross was released by the Oakland Athletics after clearing waivers. Ross signed with the A's on April 8 after he was released by the Arizona Diamondbacks. In nine games for Oakland before he was designated for assignment three days ago, Ross batted .091 with no home runs and three RBIs. - - The Cleveland Indians activated outfielder/designated hitter Nick Swisher from the disabled list to make his season debut on Tuesday night and optioned outfielder Tyler Holt to Triple-A Columbus. Swisher has not played in the major leagues this season while rehabbing from knee surgeries last year. - - Washington Nationals third baseman Anthony Rendon is recovering from a MCL sprain that sent him to the disabled list on April 1. Now he's several weeks from baseball activities because of a new injury. Rendon had played two games at second base last week when he felt tightness in his side and returned to Washington. - - Miami catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia was released after the Marlins were unable to trade him. Saltalamacchia was designated for assignment last week. He is now free to sign with another team at the major league minimum. The Marlins will be responsible for the remaining $15 million of the three-year, $21 million contract he signed before the 2014 season. - - Two weeks after Milwaukee Brewers second baseman Scooter Gennett was injured in the shower, he was activated from the disabled list. Gennett suffered a laceration to his left hand while reaching for shampoo in the shower after a game in Pittsburgh against the Pirates on April 20. - - Kansas City Royals closer Greg Holland, who is expected to come off the disabled list on Wednesday, according to the Kansas City Star. Holland has been sideline since April 18 with a strained pectoral muscle. Wade Davis was the Royals' closer in Holland's absence, and Davis saved five games with a 0.00 ERA. - - Renovations to Wrigley Field are ongoing but a portion of the remodeled outfield bleacher seats are opening May 11. Monday's game against the New York Mets will coincide with the Cubs' planned "Pink Out" for breast cancer awareness. (Editing by Frank Pingue)
