May 24 (The Sports Xchange) - The Pittsburgh Pirates placed right-hander Ryan Vogelsong on the 15-day disabled list with facial fractures on Tuesday, one day after he was hit in the face with a pitch. Vogelsong suffered an injury to his left eye and there was damage to the orbital bone, the team said after Monday's game against the Colorado Rockies. - - Boston reliever Carson Smith will have Tommy John surgery and miss the rest of the 2016 season. The 26-year-old Smith had a flexor muscle issue that limited his spring training. He finally appeared in a regular season game on May 3 and didn't pitch again until May 9 against Oakland. - - The New York Yankees picked up right-hander Layne Somsen off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds and sent him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. In Somsen's first two major-league appearances for the Reds this season, he pitched 2 1/3 innings and gave up five earned runs, six hits and three walks. (Editing by Frank Pingue)
