Baseball-Major League Baseball roundup

March 29 (The Sports Xchange) - The Boston Red Sox named right-hander Clay Buchholz as their Opening Day starter. However, the announcement by manager John Farrell on Sunday was accompanied by some troubling injury news regarding relief pitcher Koji Uehara and catcher Christian Vazquez. Rick Porcello will pitch the second game for Boston. The rotation after that has yet to be determined. The bullpen is also unsettled after Farrell told the Providence Journal that he is not counting on closer Uehara being available for Opening Day. Uehara experienced some pain in his hamstring during a bullpen session, and he will rest for a day or two before beginning the rehabilitation process again. Uehara first injured his hamstring on March 17 while doing conditioning drills. Vazquez, 24, has been bothered by a sore right elbow, and CSN New England reported he will be examined by Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday. Andrews specializes in Tommy John surgery. -- Detroit Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said right-hander Justin Verlander is feeling better from the cramping in his right triceps. Verlander played catch briefly Sunday morning for the first time since leaving Friday's spring training game. Verlander is tentatively scheduled to make his final spring start Thursday against the New York Yankees. -- The Miami Marlins named right-hander Henderson Alvarez as their Opening Day starter. Miami opens the season against the Atlanta Braves at Marlins Park on April 6. The rest of the rotation has yet to be set. -- The Seattle Mariners confirmed reports Saturday night that pitching prospect Victor Sanchez died from injuries in an accident last month in Venezuela. CBS Sports reported that Sanchez died from injuries suffered on Feb. 13 when he was hit in the head by a boat propeller while swimming off Carupano, Venezuela. He had been in a coma since the accident. Last year for Double-A Jackson of the Southern League, Sanchez was 7-6 with a 4.19 ERA. -- The Texas Rangers added left-handed help for their bullpen, acquiring Sam Freeman from the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday for a player to be named or cash. Freeman was 2-0 with a 2.61 ERA in 38 innings spanning 44 appearances for the Cardinals last season. (Editing by Larry Fine)
