Baseball-Major League Baseball roundup

May 4 (The Sports Xchange) - The New York Yankees placed designated hitter Alex Rodriguez on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a strained right hamstring. A-Rod had an MRI on Wednesday morning after injuring his hamstring in Tuesday night's 4-1 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. The 40-year-old Rodriguez left the game after he grabbed at his right hamstring while running out a grounder in the fifth. Rodriguez is struggling this season, hitting .194 with five home runs and 12 RBIs. He is in the next-to-last season of his 10-year, $275 million contract, and is being paid $21 million this year and next. - - Major League Baseball has yet to make a decision on the fate of two games between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Miami Marlins on May 30-31 in San Juan because of health concerns associated with the Zika virus outbreak. El Nuevo Dia, a Spanish-language newspaper, reported that the games would be cancelled. Both teams recently voted on whether or not they wanted to travel in Puerto Rico later this month. The results were sent to MLB. The players' union met with MLB officials on Monday to discuss the situation. Yahoo Sports reported Tuesday that the games could be moved to Miami, but under terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the union and MLB would have to agree on the location change. The final two games of the four-game series between the teams were already scheduled for Miami on June 1-2. - - The Cleveland Indians added backup catcher Chris Gimenez in a deal with the Texas Rangers for cash considerations. The move was made after Cleveland backup catcher Roberto Perez suffered an injured right thumb last weekend and was placed on the 15-day disabled list. To clear space on the 40-man roster, the Indians designated catcher Adam Moore for assignment. The 33-year-old Gimenez is joining the Indians for the third time in his career. The team drafted him in 2004 and he made his major league debut with the Indians in 2009. He left after the 2010 season and spent time with the Tampa Bay Rays and the Texas Rangers before returning to Cleveland in 2014 for eight games. - - Washington Nationals manager Dusty Baker said outfielder Ben Revere, who has missed all but one game with a right oblique strain, will join the club in Chicago for the upcoming series against the Cubs. Revere was placed on the 15-day disabled list April 6, and has been on a rehab assignment that completed Tuesday. "I don't know when he'll be activated, but we'll see him (tonight)," Baker said. "We'll figure out when to activate him." - - Kansas City Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas was back in the starting lineup after being held of out the last two games with a swollen left thumb. Moustakas had a two-run single as a pinch-hitter in the Royals' comeback Tuesday night. His single tied the score off Washington closer Jonathan Papelbon. Moustakas scored the game-winner on a single from Lorenzo Cain. - - Los Angeles Angels manager Mike Scioscia wasn't sure if right-hander Garrett Richards would take his next scheduled turn Friday against the Tampa Bay Rays. Richards lasted just four innings his last time out because of cramps and dehydration. He also missed his usual between-starts bullpen session. Richards is 1-3 with a 2.34 ERA in six starts for the Angels this season. - - Oakland A's outfielder Coco Crisp was out of the lineup for a second straight game. Crisp has a sore heel and also had a doctor's appointment Wednesday morning for a "non-baseball medical issue," A's manager Bob Melvin said. Third baseman Danny Valencia (hamstring), barring a setback during his rehab game on Wednesday night with Class A Stockton, will travel with the A's to Baltimore on Thursday and be activated from the disabled list Friday when Oakland opens a three-game series with the Baltimore Orioles, Melvin said.
