April 1 (The Sports Xchange) - The New York Yankees announced Tuesday that infielder Eduardo Nunez, who was once viewed as their heir apparent at shortstop, was designated for assignment. The move clears a clear a spot on the 25-man roster for infielder Yangervis Solarte. He impressed the team during camp, hitting .429 in 42 at-bats. He has yet to make his major-league debut. Nunez hit .267 with a .379 slugging percentage in 270 games over a four-year tenure for the Yankees. Manager Joe Girardi said it was "extremely difficult" delivering the news to Nunez. The Yankees also placed infielder Brendan Ryan on the 15-day disabled list with a cervical spine nerve injury. The move is retroactive to March 22. - - New York Mets closer Bobby Parnell has been diagnosed with an incomplete tear of the medial collateral ligament in his right elbow, the team announced Tuesday. Parnell, examined after complaining of tightness in his right forearm after blowing a save in Monday's Opening Day game against the Washington Nationals, received a platelet-rich plasma injection and has been prescribed complete rest for approximately two weeks. The team said the right-hander is then to begin a throwing program, the outcome of which will determine whether elbow surgery will be required. Parnell had a 2.16 ERA and 22 saves in 2013 as the Mets' closer. - - Texas Rangers right-hander Yu Darvish will throw a side session before Tuesday's game with the Philadelphia Phillies and could be in line to start this weekend. Darvish, who led the major leagues with 277 strikeouts last season, was scheduled to start on Opening Day but developed a stiff neck during spring training and last pitched in a game three weeks ago. - - Los Angeles ace left-hander Clayton Kershaw will need another two to three weeks of rehab before a swollen muscle in his upper back is re-evaluated, the Dodgers announced Tuesday. Kershaw was placed on the disabled list Sunday and is eligible to be activated on April 14, but it is unlikely that the 2013 National League Cy Young Award winner will be ready to pitch, according to manager Don Mattingly. Kershaw's rehab will include a submaximal throwing program for the next two to three weeks. Mattingly expects Kershaw to make a rehab start before returning to the Dodgers' rotation.
